Police in Bari on Monday executed preventive measures against 130 people suspected of involvement in the local mafia.
The suspects, who were said to include well-known names in localcriminal and political circles, are under investigation perhaps-called political-mafia electoral exchange in relation to the2019 municipal elections in Bari, extortion, unlawful carryingand possession of weapons, illegal drug sales, interference in the bidding process and fraud in sports competitions, all of which aggravated by the mafia method.
They include Tommaso 'Tommy' Parisi, a singer and son of the Japigia district boss Savino, who has already been sentenced to eight years for mafia association at first instance, and former regional councilor and lawyer Giacomo Olivieri, who have both been remanded in custody;
and Olivieri's wife, city councillorMaria Carmen Lorusso, who was elected in 2019 on the listsupporting centre-right mayoral candidate Pasquale Di Rellamayor' list before switching to the majority supporting mayorAntonio Decaro.
