For the third time in just a few weeks, tens of thousands of people are taking to the streets in Hamburg against right-wing extremism.

There are combative speeches and a performance that gets the crowd jumping.

Hamburg - Remmidemmi against the right: Tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Sunday in a large demonstration in Hamburg for a cosmopolitan society.

After a rally at the Dammtor with a performance by the Hamburg cult band Deichkind and several speeches, the colorful protest march set off towards the city center under the motto “We are the firewall - together against right-wing extremism”.

“It’s a huge sign that there are so many people today,” said a spokeswoman for the organizers.

Two hours after the demo began, the organizers of the climate movement Fridays for Future spoke of more than 50,000 participants.

A police spokesman said in the evening that 50,000 to 60,000 people were at the demonstration.

The transformation researcher Maja Göpel called on supposed AfD protest voters to rethink their stance and “look beyond the firewall” in view of three clearly right-wing extremist regional associations.

At the same time, the firewall against right-wing extremism needs doors “for all those who say: “I got lost, I’ve now recognized.””

Hamburg's DGB leader Tanja Chawla also took aim at the AfD.

This is racist and anti-democratic, she said.

According to her, the large demonstration was intended to show “that the AfD has no chance and does not belong here.” At the same time, she announced another large demonstration against the right in the Hanseatic city for June 8th, the day before the European elections.

The musical highlight was the performance of the cult band Deichkind.

When the members of the electropunk formation rocked the stage with the slogan “Impulsive people against the right” on their outfit, alluding to their hit “Remmidemmi,” the sun even briefly broke through.

The crowd enthusiastically jumped along to each of the four songs; for many of the small children demonstrating in front of the stage, it must have been the first real concert of their lives.

After her final song with the line “We don’t want Nazis and no AfD,” Deichkind made it clear that the fight against right-wing extremism should continue: “It goes on, this is just the beginning.”

A broad alliance of around 40 associations and organizations called for the rally.

The audience was correspondingly mixed.

Slogans such as “Colorful instead of brown”, “Red card for the AfD” or “If AfD is the answer, how stupid was the question?” could be seen on banners and posters.

The event was the third major demonstration against the right in the Hanseatic city within a few weeks.

On January 19th, according to an investigation by the interior authorities, at least 180,000 people responded to a call for a demonstration. Nine days later, according to the police, around 60,000 people took to the streets against right-wing extremism.

In Schleswig-Holstein there were again actions against the right on Sunday.

According to police reports, around 2,500 people took part in a human chain around the Kleiner Kiel waterway in Kiel in the afternoon.

According to police reports, 3,000 to 3,500 people in Lübeck took a stand against right-wing extremism.
