There is too much wild life in Saxony-Anhalt's forests, says the responsible ministry.
It calls for more shooting - the state hunting association disagrees.
Halle - Because there is an overpopulation of game, the Saxony-Anhalt Forestry Ministry is demanding higher numbers of kills, according to a newspaper report.
The hunting authorities were instructed in December to increase the number of kills in endangered hunting districts, reports the “Mitteldeutsche Zeitung” published in Halle (Monday).
According to the responsible ministry in Magdeburg, there is regular contact with the state hunting association in order to shape the procedure together.
According to the report, conservationists also believe that more hunting of red deer, roe deer and fallow deer is unavoidable.
“We have far too much game.
Our forests are becoming impoverished because all the young shoots are being eaten away,” said Christian Kunz, state director of the Federal Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) to the newspaper.
“In order for the forests to recover, a lot more game needs to be shot.”
However, the hunting association strictly rejects increased hunting.
“We do not share the assessment that there is too much game in the forests,” managing director Wolf Last told the newspaper.
From his point of view, the shooting targets are even too high.
They were based on a conservation guideline from a time when wolves were not yet present in the cultural landscape.
The shooting targets would have to be lowered, especially for young animals, because many in this group would be killed by wolves.
According to the state administration office, 4,400 red deer animals were hunted down in Saxony-Anhalt in the 2022/23 hunting season.
There were 4,100 for the slightly smaller fallow deer and 44,500 for the roe deer.
