Wagenknecht's party will officially take part in the EU elections.

Top candidate De Masi will lead the BSW list in June.

Berlin – Now it is official: The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW for short) will definitely take part in the European elections.

According to a report from the

German Press Agency (dpa),

the BSW overcome the hurdles for participation in the European elections on Monday (February 26).

The party will be on the list of parties to be elected on June 9th.

According to its own information, the BSW has more than met the 4,000 signatures required by electoral law for new parties, with 18,000 signatures.

Wagenknecht said on Monday after the news was announced: “The response is fantastic.

In a very short space of time we received far more than the required signatures.

This now ensures that the BSW can take part in the European elections.”

Wagenknecht leaves the Left and founds a party: “Incompetence and arrogance”

Wagenknecht caused controversy when she decided to leave her long-standing party, the Left.

The background was differences of opinion regarding arms deliveries to Ukraine and asylum policy.

Wagenknecht criticized “unregulated immigration” when she announced her departure, as the

Tagesschau

reported.

The party, which began as an association, was officially founded on January 8th, 2024.

At the federal press conference on the same day, the 54-year-old cited the “incompetence and arrogance” in the Berlin Bundestag and the government as the reason for founding the new party.

Many people felt let down by politics, said the former left-wing politician.

De Masi as the BSW's top candidate in the upcoming European elections

A total of 8 other MPs said goodbye and resigned from the Left Party, which meant that it lost its parliamentary group status in the Bundestag.

Now Wagenknecht hopes that she can tap the AfD's protest voters through her conservative-left approach.

In current surveys, the BSW could make it into the Bundestag.

In the European elections, Wagenknecht is relying on its top candidate Fabio De Masi.

When she officially founded the party in January, she was already convinced that she would be ready with the party program and candidates for the elections in June.

De Masi, a former member of the Left and the Bundestag, was a member of the EU Parliament from 2014 to 2017.

De Masi was able to attract attention primarily through his help in clearing up financial scandals.

The 43-year-old was actively involved in clarifying the Panama Papers, Cum-Ex and Wirecard.

Whether he will manage to move back into Brussels remains to be seen.
