The daily expenses of a royal are apparently considerable.
2023 was an expensive year, especially for Queen Margrethe, King Frederik and Queen Mary.
Copenhagen – At the turn of the year, Queen Margrethe II (83) surprised the Danish people by announcing her abdication.
Just two weeks later, she put her plan into action and handed the scepter over to her son, Crown Prince Frederik (55), and his wife Mary (52), who have since been allowed to call themselves King Frederik X and Queen Mary of Denmark.
More than eight million euros: In 2023, Queen Margrethe was not at her most frugal
But in her last year as queen, Margrethe II really suffered financially.
As the Danish newspaper
Se og Hør
reports, Margrethe spent an incredible 169,916.19 Danish crowns per day in 2023 - that's the equivalent of 22,784.34 euros!
But it's not just the actual amount that's significant, the increase in expenses compared to previous years is also likely to make you shake your head.
Our new WhatsApp channel also offers more news from the world of entertainment.
For the entire year 2023, Queen Margrethe's expenses amounted to around 62 million crowns (8.3 million euros).
In 2022, the costs were 46.5 million (6.2 million euros), which corresponds to an increase of just over 33 percent.
But what did Margrethe II spend so much money on?
“The increase in spending in 2023 is due to Queen Margrethe's extensive renovation work at Marselisborg Palace,” explains Dan Folke Pedersen, the royal family's chief financial officer, to
Se og Hør
.
These are the costs that matter
The figures available to
Se og Hør
were published as part of the VAT refund.
Only the costs of goods and services subject to VAT are included; other cost centers such as wages and salaries for employees are not included.
The total expenditure for 2023 is likely to be significantly higher than 8.3 million euros.
King Frederik and Queen Mary also spent more in 2023 than in the previous year
Marselisborg Castle is the summer residence of the Danish royal family.
Not the only royal property that drove up costs, as Frederik and Mary also dug deeper into their pockets in 2023 than in the previous year.
The then Crown Prince family spent 12.5 million Danish crowns (around 1.7 million euros) - almost 200,000 euros more than in 2022. According to Dan Folke Pedersen, this was due to renovation work in the office building at Fredensborg Castle.

But the renovation work cannot be solely responsible, as Queen Margrethe's expenses had already increased dramatically in previous years.
In 2020, Margrethe's annual consumption was 27.4 million crowns (3.7 million euros), in 2021 it was 36.8 million crowns (4.9 million euros).
It remains to be seen whether King Frederik and Queen Mary will become more frugal and spend less again in 2024.
Neither Marselisborg Palace nor Fredensborg Palace are among the main residences of the Danish royals - Frederik and Mary, as king and queen, will live somewhere else in the future.
