The end had been decided for a long time because there was no successor: The couple who run the business are now gradually closing their nursery in Bamberg - and selling inventory and plants.
Bamberg – “Every day was a gift,” Carmen Dechant told our editorial team in August last year when she looked back on the long history of her gardening business.
For over 30 years, Dechant ran the “Hofstadt-Gärtnerei” in Bamberg together with her husband Michael - growing vegetables, herbs, flowers and everything a gardener's heart desires.

Nobody wanted to take over the business - gradual closure and clearance sale
In 2022, the couple decided to give up the century-old family business.
But no gardener could be found to take over - even after a long search.
Running a business like this would simply no longer be an option for most people, said Carmen Dechant in August 2023. Back then, Dechant had already told our editorial team that he wanted to sell the remaining inventory and plants by the end of the year.
The nursery was open on Fridays and Saturdays.

The process of dissolving the business with an area of more than 4,400 square meters will continue into the new year.
At the beginning of February, Carmen Dechant wrote on the social network
: “We are closing down our nursery” – followed by a crying emoji.
The operator repeatedly publishes pictures of wooden boxes, plant pots, or chip baskets - all to be given away or sold in order to further clear out the business.
According to the information, the clearance sale will continue from mid-March.

The closure of the traditional gardening business follows the history of many other gardening businesses - not just in Bamberg.

With the end and clearance sale of the “Hofstadt-Gärtnerei” another one is now disappearing.
