The traffic chaos on the two most recent holiday Saturdays in the Upper Isar Valley and Loisachtal brought politicians into the spotlight.

Representatives from the Oberland and Tyrol met in the Garmisch district office.

Result: Supraregional solutions are needed to deal with the sheet metal avalanches.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - The initiative came from Mittenwald's mayor Enrico Corongiu (SPD).

The place was particularly affected by traffic chaos.

District Administrator Anton Speer (FW) invited everyone to a table.

District Administrator Josef Niedermaier (FW) from the Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen district, which is also plagued by traffic, and the district captain of Innsbruck-Land Michael Kirchmair were in the meeting room.

In addition, Garmisch-Partenkirchen Mayor Elisabeth Koch (CSU), town hall bosses from both sides of the border and representatives from the police, district office and Weilheim State Building Authority.

Legal review: What options do municipalities and district offices have?

According to the district office, it became clear during the conversation that a common solution can only be found at a supra-regional level, in particular to bring transit traffic onto the higher-level roads or leave them there.

On the German side, it is now being determined what options municipalities and district offices have to get traffic out of the towns and side and side streets.

With the government of Upper Bavaria and in cooperation with the police, the extent to which municipalities and district administrative authorities are allowed to take action is being legally examined.

Tap into Euregio projects and convene a transport congress

In order to find a cross-border solution, the district office wants to see whether projects to study traffic flows can be tapped into Euregio mergers in the Alpine region.

And a transport congress was suggested - with representatives from the federal government, the Free State and Tyrol as guests.

Round wants to meet regularly

Everything was still vague, but there was something concrete: According to district office spokesman Wolfgang Rotzsche, it was agreed to meet at least once a year for this traffic meeting.

District Administrator Speer supports this project: “There can only be a large-scale solution.”
