If porn and dirty jokes are to be believed, anal sex exists for one reason: to make men feel good.
It's considered a "birthday treat", or "a reward for saving the planet" - but for a very long time no one asks the women how they feel about the whole thing.

A new study published this week in the journal PLOS ONE is the first ever to do just that.

"Through inductive and qualitative research," the authors write, "we identified three previously undefined anal contact techniques that were found to be pleasurable by large proportions of women in the U.S.: anal thrusts, anal turns, and anal copulation."

"Anal penetration" refers to "penetrating contact... right inside the anal opening, no deeper than a fingertip/knuckle," they explain - a technique that 35 percent, or more than one in three, of respondents reported enjoying it.
Then there's also "anal adaptation": "touch on and around the anus," which was even more popular—40 percent of women reported finding it pleasurable. Finally, "anal copulation "- Touching the anus or inside it at the same time as penetrating the vagina or touching the clitoris", also received a healthy approval from 40 percent of the women.

Until now, there was no name for some of the most common and beloved anal experiences of women.
And even if there were such terms, we might not know about them, as the researchers point out that almost all information about anal sex deals with the potential risks or stigma associated with this penetration, and the various ways in which women may dislike or coerce themselves.
"Little is known about the ways in which women actively choose different non-penetration techniques or how pleasure levels may vary between these techniques," the study notes.
We hardly recognize a wider repertoire of stimulation and anal stimulation methods that women can and choose, and our detailed and nationally representative data on the frequency of women's participation in the techniques and their variants, their discovery of the technique and their motivation for the techniques, are important validation for women who actively choose anal contact and stimulation to meet their needs their personal enjoyment.
