Good news for all commuting cyclists: Additional bicycle parking spaces are being planned around Poinger train station.

Poing – Poinger train station should have more parking spaces for bicycles.

It will be possible to park a total of up to 458 bicycles on both the north and south sides.

Of these, 100 parking spaces have already been built as part of the “greening of the north side”, a further 120 parking spaces were already available at the station and are simply being “modernized” such as adding roofs.

238 new parking spaces are to be created on the Deutsche Bahn property and 34 on the municipal property south of the train station.

In the future, it should be possible to store two bicycles on top of each other in several double-decker systems.

A service station with simple bicycle tools is also planned on the south side.

When presenting the site plan, several committee members pointed out at the most recent local council meeting that the distance to the memorial at the Poinger S-Bahn station, which commemorates the victims of the death train from the Second World War, should be as large as possible.

Otherwise, some people might come up with the idea of simply parking the bike there.

In order to counteract this lack of piety, Mayor Thomas Stark (non-party) promised to look for a pragmatic solution in discussions with Deutsche Bahn.

With a revised, formally new draft, it would take another year and a half until the company gave the okay, he explained.

The estimated cost of the construction work is 675,000 euros.

Thanks to the funding program to improve cycling in Germany, up to 75 percent of the funds can be recouped.

The committee unanimously approved the decision.

The contract is now being advertised.
