Cholera outbreak on cruise ship?
“Norwegian Dawn” is not allowed to dock due to suspicion
This means that more than 2,184 passengers and 1,026 crew members are stuck off the East African island.
The French island of La Réunion had previously rejected the ship.
The reason for the measure is the suspicion of a possible cholera outbreak on board.
The current situation is likely to bring back memories of the corona pandemic for many travelers.
In the past, some ships were turned away due to Corona outbreaks.
Other cruise trips had to be ended early due to increasing corona cases on board.
Causes and symptoms of cholera
Cholera is an intestinal infection that is spread primarily through food and water and can cause sudden watery diarrhea, according to the Tropical Institute.
The gastrointestinal infection is highly contagious.
According to the UN children's fund UNICEF, rapid spread can be facilitated by various circumstances:
Poor water and sewage systems
Floods and other climate-related natural disasters
Conflict and poverty are catalysts for the infectious disease
Lack of access to clean water increases the likelihood that cholera will become rampant shortly afterwards
The infectious disease can lead to “dehydration as a result of severe diarrhea and, if left untreated, further health complications and even death.”

Several cases of stomach illness occurred during the cruise
Since the fall of 2023, according to the UN children's fund UNICEF, "13 countries in eastern and southern Africa have been facing one of the worst cholera outbreaks in years."
Around 200,000 cases of illness and more than 3,000 deaths had been reported in the affected countries by mid-January.
The authorities therefore reacted with alarm when a number of guests developed a series of gastrointestinal illnesses on the twelve-day trip.
According to the US shipping company Norwegian Cruise Line, the majority of passengers were originally scheduled to travel home on Sunday (February 25).
The ship was then supposed to return to South Africa with new passengers.
Several cases of illness reported on board: 15 people are currently in quarantine
“Due to additional testing required by local authorities prior to entry, the Government of Mauritius has postponed disembarkation for the current cruise and embarkation for the next cruise by two days to February 27, 2024,” the shipping company said .
According to authorities, at least 14 passengers and one crew member are suffering from diarrhea and vomiting.
They are currently isolated in their rooms.
According to the tour operator, hygiene measures on board have already been increased in order to protect guests and crew.
