Amazon's computing services subsidiary, Amazon Web Services (AWS), announced on Monday that it will invest $5 billion (about 85 billion pesos) in an infrastructure cluster in the State of Querétaro.
The investment is greater than the 4.5 billion that Tesla committed to investing in its factory in Nuevo León.
AWS's plan is to build its AWS "infrastructure region" in Mexico in early 2025, according to a statement.
The investment is scheduled to take place over the next 15 years.
“The new Region, called AWS (Central) Region, will give developers,
startups
, entrepreneurs and companies, as well as government, educational and non-profit organizations, more options to run their applications and serve end users from centers. of data located in Mexico, guaranteeing that clients who wish to store their content in the country can do so,” the statement says.
The company hopes to boost the offering of advanced cloud technologies.
The announcement coincides with a global trend of companies leaving China to move operations closer to their target markets, known in Mexico as
nearshoring
.
Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of Economy, celebrated the investment.
“It represents a sign of confidence and demonstrates that the right conditions exist to support the nearshoring trend in many sectors of our economy,” said the official, according to the AWS statement.
“We applaud AWS's commitment to training students, MSMEs, and digital entrepreneurs in Mexico, on a large scale,” she added.
In an interview with the
Reuters
agency , the director of AWS in Mexico, Rubén Mugártegui, assured that the new infrastructure will be built in Querétaro, an industrial state where foreign companies have already established their operations in technology and aircraft, among other sectors.
Mugártegui declined to tell the agency whether local authorities offered AWS any tax benefits for locating there.
