With the support of the Ministry of Transport, cargo bike rental systems have been tried out since 2020 - also in Freising.

Now the balance has been drawn.

Freising

– “The conclusion that those responsible recently drew at the final event: cargo bikes have the potential to replace car journeys.

In addition, according to the experts, rental systems would also be suitable for other municipalities in Bavaria if a few things are taken into account.” This was reported by the city of Freising.

Great popularity

Freising

- Eight municipalities, 53 rental and charging stations and 133 cargo bikes: With the support of the Bavarian Ministry of Transport, cargo bike rental systems have been tried out since 2020.

Now the balance has been drawn in Munich.

At the final event, representatives of the municipalities accepted the certificates from Transport Minister Bernreiter for Freising: Dominik Fuchs, mobility officer for the city of Freising, and Karl-Heinz Freitag, mobility officer for the Freising city council.

“Cargo bikes have become increasingly popular in recent years.

They are suitable for transporting shopping home, picking up the children or for excursions,” explained Bernreiter in his welcoming speech.

“A fully automatic cargo bike system is very convenient for citizens: you save on purchase costs and space, and at the same time the bikes are easy to rent and are available at any time and at short notice.

The users in our pilot communities also appreciated this and eagerly used the cargo bikes.”

The city's press office reports: “In Freising, users stated that they had replaced a car trip by riding a cargo bike in 69 percent of cases.

In the period from January to September 2023 alone, at least 9,000 car trips were avoided in the seven municipalities.

The project has therefore fulfilled an important goal of the municipalities of relieving the burden on inner-city traffic.”

Lots of borrowing

Dominik Fuchs, mobility officer for the city of Freising, explains: “With 506 loans per month, we were able to achieve the most loans of all model municipalities during the study period.

We are pleased that the people of Freising are making such active use of this offer.” Karl-Heinz Freitag, mobility officer for the Freising City Council, adds: “With the cargo bike rental system, we were able to add an attractive alternative to using your own car.

The city’s efforts to make the infrastructure even more bicycle-friendly are also paying off here.”

The Free State of Bavaria supported cities and municipalities with a total of around two million euros to set up their rental systems.

“If local politics supports the establishment of a rental system, there is a maintenance and repair service on site and responsibilities within the administration are clearly regulated, a cargo bike rental system can be a complete success,” says Bernreiter.

“I am pleased that all municipalities will probably continue to offer the rental systems this cycling season and hope that more municipalities will join in the future.” ft

Good to know

Freising, Cadolzburg, Lechbruck, Lindau, Marktredwitz, Passau and Würzburg have taken part in the model project.

The Postbauer-Heng market took care of the necessary booking platform and app on behalf of all model municipalities.
