An actually harmless “birthday ritual” in the schoolyard developed into a mass brawl with over 40 students at the Bad Tölz southern school on Monday morning.

Bad Tölz -

A scuffle with punches and kicks in the schoolyard.

This incident makes some parents feel sick to their stomach.

They contacted our newspaper and contacted the school.

The school management informed parents of grades three to nine about the incident in a newsletter on the same day.

It says: “Unfortunately, we have to inform you that an unfortunate situation has arisen in the middle school in connection with a birthday ritual between students.

A student was physically attacked and the situation quickly escalated.” The attack occurred during the first break, around 9:30 a.m.

There were more than 40 people involved who either took part in the scuffle or stood by and did nothing.

The intervention of the recess supervisor made it possible to prevent worse consequences, according to the letter to the parents.

When asked by our newspaper, headmaster Christian Müller specified the events as follows: "There was an apparently common birthday ritual between the middle school students - a line-up with high-fives of the birthday child." The school was not aware of this ritual until now, said Müller in his written statement .

“In our opinion, the action took place without any malicious intent and the birthday student from the 9th grade is recognized and popular.”

Escalation in the schoolyard: punches and kicks instead of birthday fun

But: “He was physically attacked more violently than the students had apparently intended.” Instead of a friendly high-five, the young person was kicked and beaten.

“We quickly gathered around 40 students who either watched or took an active part.”

When asked, Müller writes that the birthday child was not injured.

“He didn't have any pain afterwards.” However, several parents are probably very worried.

For example, an anonymous email to the editors said: “Does more have to happen and everyone is looking the other way?” Other parents contacted the school management by phone and email.

The point was that “apparently two elementary school children who happened to walk past the scuffle were kicked and possibly threatened,” said Müller.

Elementary school students report kicking and threats - parents are concerned

The school responded to this incident by calling everyone involved - including the primary school students - for a discussion.

“The matter was discussed with all students involved, the class teachers and the break supervisors.

They were told in no uncertain terms that such rituals would not be tolerated in our school.” Youth social workers had been informed.

“A police prevention event has been arranged for Friday.”

Police come to preventative measures

In addition, the playground was separated spatially on Tuesday so that the third to sixth graders no longer meet the seventh to ninth graders during the break.

“We have obliged the supposed two main players to take a break at home until further notice.

Discussions took place with the parents,” said the principal.

Lars Werner from the Tölz police station confirmed that a consultation with preventative measures had been requested by the southern school.

Only then did the police find out about the incident.

“So no one called us during or after,” Werner said when asked.

To date, no police report has been filed.
