The landscape-defining avenue near Niederseeon in the municipality of Moosach is being renovated.

The old poplars are felled and new trees are planted.

This was announced by the town hall.

Moosach

- Even trees have a natural age limit.

Some only after hundreds of years.

But others also do so much earlier, says local councilor and forester Kirsten Joas.

Poplars, in the vast majority of cases clones, i.e. not grown from seeds, were among these trees with a comparatively short lifespan.

Avenue trees also always have to contend with particularly adverse conditions: soil compaction, heat from the asphalt, traffic safety cuts.

In addition, says Joas, the native mistletoe is a “benefiter” of climate change.

“It likes it warmer and, as a semi-parasite, does not have to provide its own water supply, but rather sucks from the water channels of its host tree.

If the summer is very dry, the branches behind the mistletoe can often die.”

According to the municipality, all of these factors have led to the poplar avenue at the Niederseeon riding stable showing stronger and more extensive signs of death from year to year.

“Before one poplar after another has to be felled due to the great danger for the many users of this popular path, the municipality, in close coordination with the Ebersberg Nature Conservation Authority, has decided to completely rebuild this landscape-defining avenue as soon as possible “, said the town hall.

Poplars in Niederseeon are currently being felled

If you always plant individual trees between the old ones, the new ones don't really make any progress in growth, which can be observed in many avenues.

The new mistletoe infestation would also be enormous again immediately.

Therefore, the old poplars are currently being felled.

In order to provide the animals with a temporary home until the new trees grow large, around half of the poplars were left as trunks, which were then allowed to sprout again.

Dead wood is a hotspot for biodiversity

“Strong, standing dead wood in particular is a hotspot for biodiversity!” says Josef Erl from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

The new trees should be planted between the rootstocks of the old trees in autumn.

The district advisor for horticulture at the district office recommends a “mixed avenue”.

In the face of climate change, it is not advisable to rely on just one horse, so it would probably be oaks, but perhaps other species as well.

This will make the avenue more diverse and interesting.

Above all, the trees should be long-lived and not so susceptible to mistletoe infestation.

And already big.

To ensure that a real “allee feeling” can soon be created again, the community plans to plant trees with a diameter of at least ten to twelve centimeters at breast height.

That is expensive.

A tree would cost around 500 euros.

“But it’s worth it to us!” says Mayor Michael Eisenschmid, “and we also want to offer the people of Moosach the opportunity to sponsor a tree.”
