Archaeological excavations have begun at the future drilling site of the geothermal energy project in Vaterstetten.

This does not mean that construction has started, but the project is slowly getting underway.

Vaterstetten

- On Monday, February 26th, the first excavator arrived at the drilling site of the inter-communal geothermal energy project in the communities of Vaterstetten, Grasbrunn, Haar and Zorneding so that preparatory archaeological work can begin.

Part of the property contains an archaeological monument “settlement and leveled burial mounds of prehistoric and early historical times”.

Possible archaeological finds during the ground work could lead to a longer archaeological excavation, says the Vaterstetten town hall.

“Before we can drill into the depths, we first have to search the topsoil for witnesses to our past,” said Fatherstetten Mayor Leonhard Spitzauer (CSU).

“In order not to lose any more valuable time in the further implementation of geothermal energy after a funding commitment from the federal government, we would like to be able to complete these potential excavations now,” continued the town hall boss.

Earthworks are completed before the bird breeding season begins

The earthworks would be limited to a portion of the drilling site and would be completed within a week, before the bird breeding season begins.

Klaus Korneder, Chairman of the Board of Directors of GeoEnergieMünchenOst (GEMO) and Mayor of the municipality of Grasbrunn, is pleased about this first visible sign of progress: “It is a signal to the citizens that geothermal energy is really coming.”

GeoEnergieMünchen-Ost is still sticking to its ambitious schedule: drilling is scheduled to begin in 2025, and structural preparation of the drilling site could begin in the fall.

The funding applications for implementation were submitted in January 2024 after delays caused by the federal budget freeze.

The company of the four communities is currently waiting for a positive approval decision from the federal funding agency, said the two managing directors of the funding company, Markus Porombka and Tobias Aschwer.
