Because a car rental company at Munich Airport was reckless, a 25-year-old was able to drive a sports car worth 100,000 euros to Italy and sell it there.

Now the Italian has to go to prison for two years and three months.

Airport/Landshut – Bavarians love their lakes – and especially the southernmost one: Lake Garda.

As often as he can, he jumps into the car to swap the beer mug for an Aperol Spritz.

On average, it takes around four and a half hours to reach Dolce far niente.

It was probably much faster for a 25-year-old Italian.

The computer scientist had rented a 510 hp vehicle with a top speed of 250 km/h from Munich Airport and drove it home.

However, according to the Landshut public prosecutor's office, he is said to have intended not to bring back the BMW worth 100,000 euros.

This now cost the 25-year-old his freedom: After being held in custody at Lake Garda and remanded in custody in the Landshut JVA, the jury at the Landshut District Court sentenced him to a prison sentence of two years and three months for fraud.

In addition, the confiscation of compensation amounting to 100,000 euros was ordered.

Judge Christian Lederhofer justified the seemingly harsh sentence for the man from Peschiera del Garda, who had never come into conflict with the law to date, including the high amount of damages.

The evidence even showed that the 25-year-old originally wanted to rent and own an even more expensive vehicle.

The jury was in favor of the Italian because the car rental company at the airport had “made it more than easy” for him by letting him have the car without any checks on his ability to pay.

“This borders on stupidity,” said Lederhofer in the reasons for the verdict.

The vehicle that the 25-year-old says he sold to a “casual acquaintance” is a BMW M4 Competition.

According to the prosecution, the Italian rented it at Terminal 2 on May 19, 2023 - according to the contract until May 25 at a price of 6,673 euros.

When the manager of the car rental company handed him the vehicle keys, the defendant paid 6,000 euros in cash and said he wanted to transfer the remaining amount later.

But the Italian deceived the managing director from the start and never had any intention of paying the remaining amount and returning the BMW in accordance with the contract, is the accusation.

After he was given the prospect of a prison sentence of between two years, two months and two years, four months in the event of a comprehensive confession during a mutual agreement between those involved in the proceedings, the 25-year-old fully admitted the charge.

The Italian said he couldn't explain what was driving him back then.

“It's just a crazy car.” Today he regrets the whole thing very much;

The 25-year-old said in his last word that he actually earned well and had a nice life.

Lederhofer described the Italian's confession a few minutes later in the reasons for the verdict as “quite valuable”.

The defendant thereby spared the court from having to take extensive evidence.

And it is certainly questionable whether it could have been proven that he had intended to keep the car from the start.

It could have been a spontaneous decision at a later date.

“And then it would no longer have been fraud.”

In any case, the Italian's approach was not characterized by great criminal energy.

After he provided his real personal details in the rental agreement with the car rental company, he was arrested in Italy just two months later and driven back to Bavaria at an adjusted speed, contrary to the flow of holidaymakers.

He'll stay there for a while now.
