“At that moment, when everything happened, Romina and Gonzalo were together.
They had returned, in the family we believe that
she had threatened to take the girl away from her
,” says Adriana Díaz in dialogue with
Clarín
.
She is the aunt of Romina Camejo (26), the only one detained and accused of murdering the Uruguayan businessman Gonzalo Aguiar (46) in the early hours of Monday in Punta del Este.
This Tuesday the hearing of limiting measures was held with the accused at the Maldonado Justice Center, and many family members were present to accompany her, united by the same cry:
“You are innocent, Romi, we love you!
”.
A “
power relationship
”.
This is how Romina's maternal aunt defines her relationship with Aguiar.
The same one that started three years ago, when she was 23 and he was 43.
Romina is from Montevideo, from a working family, as Adriana describes.
Since she was little she dedicated herself to dance and singing as one of her greatest dreams.
“She was always a very charismatic little girl.
All the people who follow her on social media know that she is a girl with a humble heart, easy to reach people.
I always accompanied her in all of her processes.
When she grew up and started singing, this man appeared and they began a relationship,” details the aunt, who came with Romina's cousins in the absence of her mother who stayed in Montevideo.

According to her story, Aguiar initially
wanted to support her in her artistic career
and give her tools to grow in what she loved.
He even made her travel to Colombia to work on her goal and participate in the
Latino Music Awards
.
“It was like all the toxic dating relationships we know,
where violence always intervenes
.
Things began to get complicated.
They were together intermittently, and she always ended up returning to her parents' house because she tried to escape the situation,” Adriana remarks.
The power relationship that Adriana talks about manifested itself over the years in many ways: it was not only an issue linked to the age difference, but the
gender difference and economic power
(and the political ties, as Díaz) de Aguiar emphasizes.
“One of the times she returned home, she happened to go out dancing one night.
And he
put a guard in every bowling alley in Montevideo to find her.
He found her, he convinced her.
And she always came back to believe in her promises, that she had changed, that everything was going to be okay,” he says, emphasizing her jealousy.
The intermittent relationship did not stop there, then came the marriage.
A union that Díaz now explains as part of
“Aguiar's lies
. ”
According to him,
there was never a real marriage
, since over time they discovered that “it was all a fiction.”

“There is no marriage certificate, there is no record in the court.
It's all trick
.
“He
has a family abroad
, and I think children too, one of them adopted,” he mentions.
There was a time in their relationship when they lived with Romina's family, in her mother's house.
Díaz says that since then her mother had been noticing Aguiar's
screams, attacks and mistreatment
of Camejo.
The young woman's pregnancy did not mean a truce between the parties;
On the contrary, the conflicts increased in level.
During those nine months, Romina refused to return to Aguiar.
She experienced a high-risk pregnancy due to several stressful situations.

“This man, while she was pregnant, sent her messages from fake accounts.
He harassed her throughout her
pregnancy .
The entire pregnancy with threats through.
That is all documented in audios, in messages.
That is already in the hands of justice.
In fact, when the time came to give birth to the baby, she was born prematurely,” she highlights.
According to her story, Romina was hospitalized for several days and during that time he was present.
Díaz affirms that there were situations of violence and that Aguiar “sent a person to intimidate her,” since her purpose was to participate in the birth:
“He told her that if she was not there to witness the birth of her daughter, poor thing she"
.
As a consequence, psychologists intervened to treat Romina.
From that moment, a dispute began between Gonzalo and the young woman.
She hired two lawyers to prevent Aguiar from approaching her newborn daughter alone.
Díaz says both lawyers were intimidated and resigned.

The owner of one of the most exclusive mansions in Punta del Este was murdered by his ex-partner.
The accused's aunt clarifies an important point that was not known: at the time of the murder,
Romina and Aguiar were living together again
.
Not in “La Maison” that the businessman had acquired in 2021, but in the house where he was murdered: on Mar Chiquita and Mar del Coral streets.
The
house of a friend of Aguiar
.
“She was living with her mother, and in December she returned to him.
I don't know very well the intimate things of the couple.
We suspect that she came back because of this need of
not wanting her to take the baby away from her
,” she adds.
Díaz clarifies that that morning, at Aguiar's friend's house, Romina was afraid, because she knew that the businessman was going to meet her and that some episode of violence would occur.
In fact, he points out that Aguiar arrived
accompanied by a woman with whom he had already been seeing
for months.
And it was not the first deception.
“He wanted to enter under threats.
Minutes before he had told her that
he was going to cut her into little pieces
.
The person who was with her, who is the owner of the house and her main witness, helped her block the owner of the house from entering the door.
But he managed to knock her down.
And that was when everything was unleashed,” he recalls.

Although Romina has not filed complaints at police stations for the episodes of violence that Adriana describes, they trust in the processes
documented by psychologists
during key moments such as the situation with the birth of her daughter.
Asked about the possession of weapons and the training that Romina carried out, the aunt responded that all of that
“was managed by Gonzalo
. ”
“He was not just protecting his life, because his daughter and the children of the owner of the house were also there.
She has been under threats and now she herself is afraid for her family, for her mother.
Because apparently, there are influences from people around her who exercise a lot of violence.
But we have faith in justice,” she concludes.
The word of the prosecutor and Camejo's lawyer
The public hearing of “limiting measures” was attended by the accused, Romina Camejo.
There, the accused settled in Montevideo (her parents' house) and measures were established to prevent her from leaving the country in the next 150 days while the investigation process continues.

Camejo will not be able to leave the department of Montevideo, borders will be closed, travel documents will be retained and all types of contact with witnesses in the case will be prohibited in the next 150 days.
“The investigation was not formalized, nor has the case been filed.
There are expertise that we believe will be useful to us and may be clarifying.
With this measure,
no decision was made regarding the case
, simply given the limited deadlines we saw the benefit of the doubt, and that it was prudent to ensure the subjection of the accused and continue the investigation.
There is no doubt that she shot, but we want more time to corroborate the theory of self-defense,” says prosecutor Sebastián Robles.
At the hearing, he pointed out that there are four direct witnesses to the crime.
“There was an announcement that he was going to be present at that place that day.
They didn't live together.
He was always armed.
She defended herself.
One of her fears was the physical integrity of the baby, because there was also a situation of violence against her.
"Romina stated that there were threats (from Aguiar) to take the baby," says Camejo's defense lawyer, Camilo Silvera.
The defender emphasizes the detail that they were not living together, but the aunt says the opposite.

Likewise, he expresses that he is facing a particular case due to the fact that it occurs in an area with people who can provide their statement.
“Here
what is being discussed is whether there is a crime of homicide or if
there is not a crime because there is a justification for it, which is self-defense.
In that case, there is no crime, there is no responsible person to impose a penalty on,” he indicates.
Silvera adds, finally, that until now no security measures have been designated for Camejo.
She will travel, if possible, this afternoon to Montevideo, where she will be with her baby and in the care of her family.
