Former mayor Paul Krones has gone down in the annals of Bad Wiessee as a man of action.

However, there has so far been no visible appreciation for Krones in the community.

That should change now.

Bad Wiessee

– 42 years on the local council, including 19 years as first mayor: Paul Krones has undoubtedly had a decisive influence on the town of Bad Wiessee.

“He was a special mayoral personality,” said town hall boss Robert Kühn (SPD) at the most recent municipal council meeting.

This January marked the 30th anniversary of Krones' death - at least among the younger generation, memories of him have now faded.

Now the community is paying belated tribute to its deserving former mayor: the local council has unanimously decided to rename the central parking lot “Paul-Krones-Platz”.

Krones had overcome many bureaucratic hurdles

The idea, reported Kühn, came about when the town hall was researching an article about Paul Krones in the February issue of Bürgerbote.

It was discovered that there was still no appreciation for him locally.

In the article, Krones, who first ran for mayor for the Wiesseer Block Free Voters' Community in 1965 and won, is described as a man with courage and great assertiveness, who sometimes overcame bureaucratic hurdles.

With unorthodox decisions he got several projects off the ground.

Some of his greatest achievements are the construction of the police station, the indoor spa pool, the casino on the lake, the expansion of the Sonnenbichl and, last but not least, the extension of the lake promenade.

The idea of naming the parking lot in the center after Krones was very well received by the local council.

“Thank you for this impulse,” said Bernd Kuntze-Fechner (SPD).

Along with his CSU colleague Kurt Sareiter, he is the only one on the committee who has personally experienced Krones as a public official.

“Krones Paul has done a lot for Bad Wiessee,” confirmed Kurt Sareiter.

He managed the community's fortunes confidently and with a wealth of knowledge - the population was very satisfied at the time.

Sareiter recalled that Krones was also chairman of the local ski club and as such initiated the legendary night slalom at Sonnenbichl.

“At that time, the entire world's best were with us,” said the CSU local councilor and, with regard to the naming of the central parking lot, added: “He really deserves that.”

For the CSU local council, the recognition comes a little late

Thomas Erler, also from the CSU, fully agreed with this, but noted that the honor came very late, 30 years after the death of the person being honored.

“The name no longer means anything to the young people of Wiesse.” Erler suggested that such tributes should be organized earlier in the future – if the person who should benefit from them is still in everyone’s memory.

Deputy Mayor Birgit Trinkl (FWG) took the agenda item as an opportunity to suggest a general improvement in street signage in Bad Wiessee.

In Tegernsee she noticed that there were often smaller signs underneath the street signs with an explanation of the respective street names.

“I find that very exciting,” said Trinkl.

The newly named square is scheduled to be ceremoniously inaugurated in the summer

Regardless, the local council unanimously decided to rename the central parking lot “Paul-Krones-Platz”.

The administration was instructed to take all necessary steps for this.

Mayor Kühn has already announced that there will be a public inauguration of the square in the summer.
