The mayors from the northern district of Freising are now also getting involved in the fight to maintain the emergency room at the Mainburg hospital.

- For Nandlstadt's mayor Gerhard Betz, it would be "a catastrophe if the emergency room at the Mainburg hospital was closed".

That's why he and his fellow mayors from the northern district of Freising are committed to maintaining the inpatient emergency room and inpatient basic hospital care with intensive care and internal medicine including a cardiac catheter laboratory at the Mainburg hospital.

At a joint press conference initiated by Attenkirchen's community leader Mathias Kern on Tuesday, the mayors showed solidarity with the neighboring town in the Kelheim district.

Background: Because six clinics in Ingolstadt and the districts of Eichstätt, Neuburg-Schrobenhausen, Pfaffenhofen and Kelheim have run into a deficit totaling around 75 million euros in around 2023, restructuring is now expected to take place.

According to a report commissioned for this purpose, this could result in Mainburg Hospital losing its hospital status and thus its emergency room and being downgraded to a regional health center.

The decision could be made as early as next Friday, March 1st, when the Kelheim district council makes a decision about the future of the hospitals.

Mainburg's mayor Helmut Fichtner, who also came to the press conference, emphasized that they are currently "fighting for this house in all directions" and are hoping for a solution "that is viable" despite immense time pressure.

He is assured of support from the Freising district: Beatrix Sebald, 3rd mayor of Au, emphasized that “the Mainburg hospital is vital for the north of our district”.

If the Mainburg emergency room were to be closed, the route for emergency services vehicles, for example from Nandlstadt, to the nearest clinic would become significantly longer.

“People’s lives are being lost,” she predicted.

Now it is time to “open your mouth” and work to keep the emergency room open.

In view of the deficits that arise in the areas of child care or the fire service, she also finds it incomprehensible how one could come to the conclusion that “a rural hospital simply has to be eliminated.”

That's why she and her council colleague Franz Asbeck are collecting signatures to support the “Save the Mainburg Hospital” initiative.

Mayor Betz fears that the Kelheim district is making the same mistake as the Freising district when they “let the Moosburg hospital die” years ago.

District Administrator Helmut Petz didn't want to leave this uncommented.

At the time, Moosburg was “minus 20 million marks”.

“It was no longer possible,” he said.

That's why he also showed understanding for the considerations of striving for larger clinics and strengthening them.

Nevertheless, he is open to talking about possible collaborations.

But: “We need a brilliant idea.” And of course you always have to ask yourself the question: “How much should it cost?”
