The elections in Ashdod were emotional from the first moment.
No less than five candidates presented themselves for the elections that are being held today for the mayor and the council, with the incumbent mayor Yehiel Lesri at the head who wants to win another term.

In front of him is the duo Shimon Katznelson and Barak Seri.
The latter withdrew his candidacy at the last minute in an attempt to drag Lesri into a second round, where his further term may be in jeopardy.
Katznelson is the deputy mayor and in the previous elections he received no less than six seats and was the largest faction.
As part of the rotation agreement between them, it was decided that if they were elected, Kenthalson, an associate of Avigdor Lieberman, would serve as mayor for 4 years and Seri, an associate of Aryeh Deri, would serve for the fifth year.

A sigh of relief was heard from Lesri's side after Avi Amsalem of Shas, who also held six seats in the council, also withdrew his candidacy for mayor - and transferred his support to Lesri in the upcoming elections. Together with the support of the ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazi parties, Lesri is expected to lead in the elections, with the remaining question being whether Will manage to decide in the first round and receive more than 40 percent support.
