Ex-RAF terrorist Daniela Klette has been arrested after three decades on the run.

A new trend among left-wing extremists probably also proved fatal.

Berlin – For three decades she was like a ghost, living invisibly underground.

Now the former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette has been arrested.

The police found the 65-year-old in the apartment of an apartment building in Berlin-Kreuzberg.

Former RAF terrorist Daniela Klette arrested - two wanted people still on the run

30 years ago she and the two former RAF terrorists Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg went into hiding.

The trio is accused of attempted murder and is said to have repeatedly robbed banks in recent years.

They are said to have stolen a total of two million euros.

Dust and cooking are still on the run.

Left-wing extremist scene in Berlin-Kreuzberg: RAF people are heroes

The fact that Daniela Klette was able to stay hidden in Kreuzberg for so long is no coincidence, says terrorism expert Hans-Jakob Schindler from the Counter Extremism Project (CEP) to

IPPEN.MEDIA

.

“There is a large and very active left-wing extremist scene in Berlin.

Many people in this milieu still consider the RAF men to be heroes.

For the new generation of left-wing extremists, these are grandmas and grandpas who are revered.”

With such a well-connected support scene behind them, it was easier to go into hiding: “The trio didn’t have to rent an apartment and were also supported financially,” explains Schindler.

“Even the first generation of the RAF had little difficulty going into hiding for long periods of time.” The first generation of the Red Army Faction (RAF) around the central figures Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Ulrike Meinhof had left the student movement at the end of the 1960s educated and quickly radicalized.

In the years that followed, their successors tried, among other things, to free imprisoned RAF members through acts of terrorism.

A total of 33 deaths were attributed to left-wing terrorists, and dozens of people were injured in attacks.

The RAF members remained undetected for 30 years: “It’s always a question of resources”

Why did the arrest happen now of all times?

According to information from security circles, Burdock was identified using fingerprints.

“One of the things that has certainly been their downfall is that the left-wing extremist scene has recently become so fraternal with terrorist organizations like Hamas or Samidoun.

So the authorities had a much greater focus on them again.” And with it the supporters of the ex-RAF trio.

Most recently, the RAF trio was also the subject of the ZDF program “Aktenzeichen XY”; the police had only reopened the investigation against the left-wing terrorists some time ago.

After the broadcast there were over 100 new tips from the public.

Traces of burdock, dust and Garweg also appeared at the crime scenes after bank robberies.

And yet the police did not have the former left-wing terrorists on their radar for a long time.

This is also due to a weighing up of priorities, says expert Schindler: “It’s always a question of resources.

We have a large right-wing extremist scene with a high potential for violence and a dangerous Islamist scene.

The security authorities cannot be everywhere at the same time and investigate with the same intensity.”
