The Protestant community meeting that took place on Sunday in the Christ Church in Peiting was about an explosive topic: the renewal of the dilapidated church roof.

Members also expressed concerns.

Peiting – It was somewhat unusual for the Protestant pastor Brigitte Weggel not to welcome the congregation in the church with the liturgical greeting, as she openly admitted at the beginning.

Because last Sunday the community was not invited to the church service, but to the Protestant community meeting in the Christ Church.

An explosive topic was on the agenda for the day.

The crowd was correspondingly large, the pews and chairs were completely occupied by parishioners, members of the church council, the mayor and interested parties.

The topic of the community meeting was the dilapidated church roof, which could not simply be repaired with a few repairs, but had to be completely rebuilt.

According to an architect's estimate, the costs would be around 400,000 euros, which caused great shock in the parish and thus made them aware that this was a real construction project.

The asbestos roof should be replaced within four to five years.

Ideas for financing

The church council and the congregation then raised questions such as: “Should we take new paths?” or “What should the church look like in the future?”

This was already discussed in detail by the church council at the 2023 closed meeting.

The regional church therefore sought direct answers to the questions about what the future of the Protestant community in Peiting should look like.

What is certain is that, according to the state office, the community in Peiting will be retained and that there should be a new position plan with the forecast of the merger of the Protestant parishes of Schongau and Peiting with a total of two pastor positions.

The cost situation shows that a third of the costs could be financed from the reserves of the Peiting Protestant community, another third from the regional church and an additional part from the deanery's emergency fund.

In the end, around 80,000 euros remained outstanding.

After Fabian Heerd, extended church council, explained all the facts about the current situation very well, he opened up the factual questions with which those present could have their say.

The listeners' questions revolved around, among other things, financing, possible alternatives to building a new church roof in terms of usable rooms and the property - or concerns about whether the church would still be needed in the future as membership numbers dwindled, and whether it would ultimately be worth 400,000 euros would stay.

Ideas were also put forward on how to approach funding, such as a benefit concert.

Lots of memories of church

Towards the end, Fabian Heerd invited those present to share their own connections to the Christ Church.

It was very clear that many parishioners have fond memories of this church, such as their own baptism, wedding and later the baptism of their children.

Or the young people who talked about their wonderful experiences not only during their confirmation in church, which was “mega cool” and it would therefore be “a great shame” if they no longer existed.

There were also strengthening voices that appealed to the fact that it was not a question of “if” but rather of “how”.

New residents who recently arrived also reported how well they felt welcomed into the Protestant church community.

Almost everyone present agreed on one point: it would be an emotional loss if the church no longer existed and people still didn't know where to go.

At the end, Pastor Weggel thanked you for the many and good contributions and added that new elections for the church council are coming up in October, of which a large part will have to be re-elected.

Anyone who would feel addressed is welcome to stand for election.

It must be clear to anyone that this term in office would be about the roof.

But who knows, maybe someone will feel called to this topic.

With a smile, Pastor Weggel gave the tip that you could do a quick check at www.kv-wahl-bayern.de.
