Highlights: Sex toy research reveals what women really want from the penis - voila! Sheee. A new study examined what exactly women want from their vibrator - maybe we'll finally get a clue to the answer to the question of whether size matters. A large majority of the toys (86.8 percent) were made of a skin-like material, but less than half had a realistic skin tone. Most followed the morphology of the human penis to some extent, with veins in 72.5 percent and a glans in 81.9 percent of them.

Sometimes, science is about discovering new life, curing the incurable, or sending humanity to the moon and stars.

Sometimes, science tries to find the ideal shape for a plastic vibrating penis that can be inserted into the vagina.

Today, friends, is one of those days.

A new study asked the question that has secretly arisen for all of us: does size really matter and what does it mean when it comes to an artificial organ?

There is limited research on people's preferences when it comes to sex toys, in part because society still has a ways to go to normalize the use of toys in shared and solo sex, and yet, scientists still know very little about what discerning customers are looking for in their vibrators.

"YouTuber Zoe Sag's involvement with sex toys led to her removal from the high school media studies curriculum, and sparked conversations about female sexual pleasure and sex education," explain the authors of the new study.

"While sex toy maker Laura DiCarlo was stripped of her industry award for a new vibrator at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show for violating organizers' rules around 'obscenity'".

Despite the prohibitions surrounding sex toys, virtual phalluses have a long and deep history.

The Romans used them.

It was recently discovered that chimpanzees will use them if they are allowed to, and there is already quite a bit of evidence to suggest that using toys can have health benefits.

Dr Sarah A. Jones and Narys Bushnell of the University of Kent sourced data from the UK's largest online sexual health retailer to shed light on this question - they looked at the size, shape and price of 265 vaginal sex toys to see where consumer preferences lie, Only those that were penis-shaped, specifically designed to be inserted into the vagina, were tested, only a quarter of them with vibration functions.

Using a combination of visual evaluation of online images, the technical specifications available on the website and customer reviews, the researchers systematically analyzed each toy. A large majority of the toys (86.8 percent) were made of a skin-like material, but less than half had a realistic skin tone. Most followed the morphology of the human penis to some extent, with veins in 72.5 percent and a glans in 81.9 percent of them, but only 36.2 percent had testicles

. There is very little evidence that consumers were actually looking for these realistic features, and previous research suggests that customers may be intimidated by dildos that are hyper-realistic: "They often chose sex accessories that were specifically designed not to resemble a penis."

Price was also found to be an important factor. The retail price The average of the toys evaluated was 44.61 pounds (about $56.60, about NIS 200).

The more anatomically realistic models also tended to come with a higher price tag.

The biggest question of all - the size/ShutterStock

And now for the biggest question of all: the size.

We know how concerned men can be about the size and diameter of their penis, and how disappointed women can be when they get into bed with someone new and discover an inadequate size - and the news is that when it comes to silicone implants, the results have been surprising.

"At least with regard to toys, even though their size did influence the prediction of product popularity, while the length was not significant at all," according to the study.

“In our sample, the five most popular products had an average size of 4.85 inches (12.3 cm), which is exactly the average size of a real penis.” Vibration is also impersonal, it turns out “We were also surprised that additional vibration functions did not predict the popularity of the items. "

So, in conclusion: it seems that the most popular toys for vaginal insertion are those that are not exact replicas of the penis, and certainly not a larger-than-life model, and not even in a realistic color - the consumers of these products are interested in pastel-colored vibrators, not too big and not too elaborate - convenient to use and accessible to pay for.

"Studies on sex toy preference, such as this one, can also contribute to the design and marketing of future products, as well as reveal the user's preference for the physical properties of the organ, whether real or toy," the authors conclude.
