DIW President Marcel Fratzscher has several ideas on how we can solve the shortage of skilled workers in the long term.

One of them is to finally take Generation Z seriously.

61 percent of German employees fear burnout.

30 percent of all respondents have already had one.

This is shown by the study “Working 2023” by the company health insurance company Pronova, which is available to

Compared to before the corona pandemic, this is an increase of eleven percentage points.

Why is that?

“One reason for this is the blurring of boundaries around work,” says Prof. Marcel Fratzscher in an interview with

BuzzFeed News Germany

.

He is President of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) and Professor of Macroeconomics at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

Many employees demand home offices.

Many people also see digitalization and flexible working hours as positive, but all of this also has risky sides.

“Work is no longer limited and everyone is practically always available,” says Fratzscher.

A second point is the changing demands on employees.

“Our jobs have become much more complex.

Employees have to constantly learn and their tasks change.

That puts a lot of people under pressure.” The third reason is that there are more and more single parents who “feel the stress even more strongly”.

DIW President: “People who want to work less should work less”

Anyone who is absent due to burnout is missing from work.

This doesn't help the currently weakening economy, on the contrary.

But how does the world of work have to change so that employees remain happy, healthy and therefore productive?

“The world of work must respond more to the individual needs of employees and take into account their wishes regarding working hours, place of work and responsibility,” says DIW President Fratzscher.

“People who want to work less should work less.”

They wouldn’t get as much done in four days as they would in five days.

But if you take into account the increasing number of sick days and the increasing number of people unable to work, it becomes clear: “It makes economic sense for people to work as much as they want.”

It makes economic sense for people to work as much as they want.

Marcel Fratzscher on Gen Z: “It’s not egoism, it’s self-protection”

Then Generation Z is right when they demand a better work-life balance?

The DIW president says yes.

“We should all learn a lesson from Generation Z,” demands Fratzscher.

“Even when I was young, old white men complained about how lazy the younger generation was.

We simply have to ignore that.”

The corona pandemic, which makes Gen Z feel lonely, the war in Ukraine, the climate crisis: Rarely has a generation had such difficult starting opportunities as Gen Z. “That's not selfishness, that's it Self-protection,” says the economist.

We should all learn a lesson from Generation Z.
