Wintery weather in March is not uncommon in Germany.
However, meteorologists disagree about whether snow will fall and what role the polar vortex plays.
Kassel – Soak up the sun, enjoy your free time in the fresh air: February made it possible.
Even though some days seemed gray and gloomy, the first feelings of spring still appeared every now and then.
February was even warmer than a typical March.
Weather expert Jan Schenk from
The Weather Channel
predicted a winter comeback in a video.
However, at IPPEN.MEDIA
's request,
meteorologist Dominik Jung from
wetter.net
and the German Weather Service (DWD) contradicted this.
“White surprise” – Will snow fall again in Germany at the beginning of March?
“Some cooler air is coming our way,” explained Schenk.
It's not super cold, but it's enough to cause "a few white spots" to appear on Sunday (March 3rd).
He also predicted snowfall for the night from Tuesday to Wednesday and it could be slippery in the morning.
The meteorologist spoke of a “white surprise”.
“So, winter is coming back a bit,” although the snow that has fallen can melt away in the sun.
The jet stream and the polar vortex are responsible for the weather developments, he explained.
Cold air from Greenland is moving towards Germany, the polar vortex is supporting this.
Polar vortex as the cause of cool weather – meteorologist takes a stand
The forecasts couldn't be more contradictory.
Because qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung continues to say that a late winter break is not to be expected.
He confirmed this to the editorial network
IPPEN.MEDIA
: “No onset of winter in sight during the day until mid-March,” he explained.
It will also be sunny and mild, with temperatures around ten to 15 degrees.

Cold air masses that promote a polar vortex could also move to Germany, he said.
But “as has been the case for weeks, it doesn’t look like it at the moment.” In addition, the polar vortex is not solely responsible for the snow and ice.
“Factors such as humidity, temperature and wind patterns” also play a role.

These are the weather forecasts according to the DWD – “Double-digit highs are more the rule”
In response to a request from IPPEN.MEDIA,
the DWD said
: “In addition to changing cloud cover and a bit of rain here and there, the sun will also shine for longer in the next few days.
Double-digit highs are more the rule than the exception.” This is also shown by the 10-day forecast on the weather service website.
It can only get cooler at night, as can be seen:
Wednesday (February 28th): +5 to -4 degrees at night / 5 to 12 degrees during the day
Thursday (February 29): +5 to -3 degrees at night / 10 to 16 degrees during the day
Friday (March 1st): 7 to 0 degrees at night / 9 to 16 degrees during the day
Saturday (March 2nd): 7 to 1 degrees at night / 10 to 16 degrees during the day
Sunday (March 3rd): 6 to 0 degrees at night / 10 to 17 degrees during the day
Monday (March 4th): 6 to 0 degrees at night / 9 to 15 degrees during the day
For the period from Tuesday (March 5th) to Thursday (March 7th), the DWD stated that the temperatures would hardly change.
At night, however, there is a “slightly increasing risk of frost”.
Snow in Germany at the beginning of March – DWD does not initially share this forecast either
Upon request, the DWD also stated that no weather model indicated widespread snowfall at the beginning of March.
So winter is no longer expected for the time being.
At most, there could be a few centimeters of fresh snow in the Alps in the medium term.
Even in the southern low mountain ranges, you can't rule out the possibility that things will turn a little white or that slush will form, at least for a short time, but that wouldn't be a big deal.
DWD told IPPEN.MEDIA
After the last bout of weather at the end of February, March will probably start with mild temperatures.
