At the beginning of spring it is clear: February 2024 was the warmest since measurements began.

Will things continue in a similar way next March?

Kassel - Already in the summer of last year, initial forecasts had predicted surprisingly mild temperatures for this year's winter.

Shortly before the meteorological start of spring on Friday (March 1, 2024), one thing is certain: February 2024 will be remembered as the warmest February since weather records began in 1881.

This replaces February 1990, which previously held the temperature record.

At that time the monthly average temperature was 5.7 degrees.

This was foreseeable not only from early forecasts from the weather services, but also in the middle of the month, when temperatures in Germany, such as around the Rhine, climbed to up to 18 degrees.

In addition, around a fifth of the weather stations in this country had not reported a single day of frost by February 24, 2024, as the

German Weather Service

(DWD) reported.

Overall, the winter of 2023/2024 is likely to be the third warmest since measurements began.

February is the warmest since weather records began 143 years ago

At 7.0 degrees, the temperature is the February average nationwide, and therefore not just 3.8 degrees higher than the February average of the previous year (3.2 degrees).

Even compared to March with an average of 4.6 degrees, February 2024, with its mild temperatures, has so far shown a clear lead.

“Nature is literally exploding.

The first pollen has been on the way for weeks.

In some regions wild garlic is already blooming.

“Nature is currently a good three weeks early,” says

Graduate meteorologist Dominik Jung told the weather portal

wetter.net.

Weather forecast for March: “There’s not much to come in terms of winter weather”

But what can we expect for the upcoming March?

If temperatures continue to climb as strongly as last month, this could mean a warmer than average start to spring.

Or will March 2024 actually make Germany freeze again, contrary to climate change and previous forecasts?

Graduate meteorologist Jung explains that compared to the end of February, not much should change at the beginning of March.

However, the meteorologist can rule out a possible return of winter.

“All in all, when it comes to winter weather, there won’t be much left,” says Jung, describing the prospects for the meteorological start of spring in Germany.

And according to the

German Weather Service

(DWD), “little wintry prospects are expected for the remaining days of the meteorological winter”.

After the 10 degree mark was easily broken on Sunday (February 25th) in many parts of the country, such as in Oschatz in Saxony with 13.5 degrees or in Lahr in Baden-Württemberg with 12.8 degrees, the spring-like weather continues beginning of the week.

“There is no trace of late winter”: These are the weather forecasts at the beginning of the week

While Monday began with occasional wintry temperatures after a partly frosty night like in Lübeck-Blankensee (-2.9 degrees) or in Sohland on the Spree (-3.8 degrees), they climbed to 6 in the morning and as the day progressed up to 12 degrees.

In Kassel, for example, the temperatures will be 9 degrees at midday, and there could be light rain, but this will decrease towards the afternoon.

In the evening the temperatures in Kassel are expected to drop to 5 degrees and at night to 2 degrees.

In Berlin, temperatures rise from 5 degrees in the morning to up to 11 degrees over the course of the day, and the sky is predominantly overcast.

After a predominantly cloudy weekend, temperatures in Frankfurt will not exceed 9 degrees with light rain in the morning and into the afternoon.

Temperatures of up to 11 degrees are expected in Munich, and there could be light precipitation in the evening after a long period of overcast skies.

According to the DWD, there are slight foehn extensions from the Alps in the southeast of the country.

In eastern Germany there may also be sunny periods as the fog clears up locally over the course of the day.

Otherwise it will be very cloudy to overcast, in the west and southwest from Münsterland to Franconia, intermittent rain can be expected.

The maximum temperatures nationwide are 6 to 13 degrees.

In addition, according to the DWD, weak to moderate winds can be expected from the east, and in the northern half from the northeast.

Tomorrow, Tuesday, temperatures of 5 to a maximum of 10 degrees can be expected across Germany.

“There is no trace of late winter,” says meteorologist Jung from

At the meteorological start of spring – this is what the weather will be like this week

And what happens next in the coming days?

According to meteorologist Jung, temperatures in Germany are likely to be between 5 and 10 degrees on Tuesday and, according to him, there is hardly any rain or rain showers to be expected.

In contrast, it could remain mostly overcast in many places, but largely dry.

On Wednesday temperatures will rise slightly to 7 to 12 degrees.

It usually stays dry, but there can also be sunny periods in places.

On Thursday, 10 to 15 degrees can be expected across Germany, with only a few showers and patches of clouds.

Sunshine can also be expected in places.

Things should also continue to be moderate towards the weekend: temperatures between 10 and 15 degrees can be expected on Friday.

Few outliers towards the 20 degree mark.

But also little precipitation

“It's heading towards spring,” says qualified meteorologist Jung, looking at an exemplary ensemble forecast for Frankfurt am Main until March 13th.

The average temperature for Frankfurt up to this day is between 10 and 12 degrees.

And what about precipitation?

“A little bit of rain every now and then, but the large amounts of rain are over,” explains

wetter.net

meteorologist Jung.

Jung also predicts only small amounts of precipitation for Berlin in the next 10 to 14 days.

According to the meteorologist, temperatures in the capital are likely to average 10 to 13 degrees until mid-March.

“It’s just bobbing along,” explains Jung.

Although the first outliers towards the middle of the month are likely to rise towards the 20 degree mark, the average temperature for this year's March in Berlin is likely to be similar to the temperatures in Frankfurt with moderate to mild temperatures between 10 degrees and 12 to 13 degrees.
