In the battle for the mayorship of Ariel last night (Tuesday) no picture of victory was achieved - this after none of the contestants managed to reach the necessary majority.

After a particularly tumultuous election campaign, the city in Samaria is going to a head-to-head battle between former member of the Knesset, Oren Hazan, and candidate Yair Shatbon.

According to the results of the initial elections, before counting the double envelopes and the votes of the soldiers, Hazan won 25% support compared to Shatbon who won 23% support.

Also, in the elections to the council, the "Ariel Strong" faction led by Oren Hazan registers a lead with about 20% support, compared to 17% support for the list led by Shatbon.

Ariel, one of the most prominent cities in Judea and Samaria and known among other things as "the capital of Samaria" has become in recent years a center of attraction for young people, among other things, due to its proximity to Gush Dan, a university and comfortable residences for students and a diverse population.

Along with this, the current election campaign in Ariel was, as mentioned, one of the most stormy the city has known, from mutual complaints to the police about vandalizing signs and posters, to stormy clashes, on the network and in the physical space.

Similar to other cities, national politics also got mixed up in the local election cauldron, with each candidate presenting support and connections that he could use if elected.

Hazan, who previously served as a member of the Knesset on behalf of the Likud faction, recruited several of the ministers and members of the Knesset on the list - his father, former MK Yehiel Hazan and a resident of the city, also tried his luck in the local elections when he ran for the presidency in 2018, but a few days before election day he unexpectedly announced his retirement.

Now, his son Oren will compete for the position in a second round, in a head-to-head battle against Yair Shatbon, an educator, who receives cross-campaign support from MKs in the national political system, from the Likud, religious Zionism to the state camp.
