Brazil's Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) has approved the resolutions regulating this year's elections in the country, where local elections will take place in October.
In one of the rules, which deals with standards for electoral advertising, the judges established a regulation for the use of artificial intelligence: if it is used irregularly, it can lead to the disqualification of the candidate.
The so-called 'deepfake' - which has been expressly prohibited - is one of the TSE's biggest concerns, due to its potential to unbalance the elections.
With technology it is possible, for example, to replace people's faces in videos or simulate their voices.
The Court also approved points that expand the responsibility and role of Big Tech in relation especially to social networks.
The standard establishes obligations for platforms to provide their services "in accordance with their duty of care and their social function".
Technology companies may also be held accountable in civil and administrative matters if they do not remove content judged to be false from the networks.
