The fashion chain C&A wants to open more branches in Germany.

The fashion retailer will now be the new tenant of the SportScheck flagship store in Munich.

Munich - While other fashion chains have to close their branches, the opposite is happening at the Dutch-German fashion chain C&A: The company wants to expand its branch network in Germany.

Giny Boer, the Dutch boss of C&A Europe, announced in an interview with the

Süddeutsche Zeitung

that she wanted to open new stores again after a phase of closures.

C&A wants to expand its branch network – and becomes a new tenant for SportScheck

“In Germany, C&A will have around 400 branches in the future, whether exactly 400 or 410 is secondary, as long as they are in the right location,” she told the newspaper.

The textile retailer currently operates 388 branches nationwide.

C&A has already secured a premium location in Munich: the fashion chain will be a new tenant in the SportScheck flagship store on Neuhauser Straße.

As a Signa subsidiary, the sporting goods retailer had to file for bankruptcy at the end of last year and has now moved out of the Joseph Pschorr House after failed negotiations with the landlord.

According to the company, the SportScheck flagship store that still resides there is one of the “largest sports stores in a German city center.”

This is very convenient for C&A: the fashion retailer has to leave its current branch on Kaufingerstrasse by the end of 2024.

Carsten Horn, Head of Germany at C&A, said in a statement: “We at C&A want to be where our customers are.

We are therefore happy to have found a new home in the Joseph-Pschorr-Haus in Munich’s city center.”

C&A: “We want to become less dependent on Asia”

C&A also plans to become more flexible when purchasing goods.

“We want to become less dependent on Asia,” said Boer.

The reason for this is the vulnerability of the supply chains.

“We have seen how fragile they are more often recently: in the pandemic, because of the blockage of the Suez Canal and now because of the attacks on the Red Sea,” said the C&A boss.

“In order to be able to react more flexibly, we want to source our goods from a larger selection of countries in the future.” In addition, C&A has reduced its range by 30 percent.

Only in November, Horn said that C&A wanted to open 100 new branches in Europe in the next three years.

The company particularly prefers locations close to the city center.

At the end of last year, C&A operated 1,300 branches in 17 countries.

According to previous information, the company has already modernized two thirds of its locations.

But there were also closures: according to the company, 21 branches in Europe closed in 2023.
