Until a few days ago, nursing staff in the country were able to vote on whether they wanted to have a nursing chamber.

It is now becoming apparent that the chamber will be rejected, says the Minister of Social Affairs.

Stuttgart - Baden-Württemberg's Social Minister Manfred Lucha (Greens) assumes that no care chamber will be set up in the southwest.

“It is becoming apparent that the quorum for a nursing chamber in Baden-Württemberg will not be reached,” said Lucha on Wednesday in the social committee of the state parliament in Stuttgart.

He regrets that. We have to think about why we couldn't convince the nursing staff of the advantages of the chamber.

He couldn't give specific figures because the objections still need to be examined.

However, it is not foreseeable that the trend will change.

Last May, the state parliament cleared the way for the establishment of a nursing chamber.

From the perspective of the green-black state government, it can give nursing professionals a voice and sharpen the professional profile.

However, the chamber should only be founded if it is wanted by a majority of nursing professionals.

For this to happen, a quorum of at least 60 percent approval would have had to be achieved.

By February 23, more than 110,000 nursing staff had written to raise objections to the establishment of the chamber.

Trade unions and the opposition had sharply criticized the procedure and described it as undemocratic.

There were also several problems in the process.

The founding committee of the nursing chamber reported that it was not possible to write to around 3,100 nursing staff because they had missing or incorrect addresses.

Any other problems in the process could have been resolved.

But there was also some sharp criticism of the chamber itself.

Main point: Most nursing staff would have to be paying members of the nursing association.

There should only be exceptions for trainees, nursing assistants and university lecturers.

The state had been pursuing the plan for a nursing chamber since 2016.

SPD health expert Florian Wahl sees the chamber’s failure as a “personal disaster” for Lucha.

“No other project has been as associated with his name as the introduction of the nursing chamber.

He promoted it to the limits of what was permissible,” said Wahl.

It has now become clear that care is not following the minister's instructions.

“This shows a massive loss of trust that the Minister of Social Affairs has among nursing employees after the Corona crisis,” said Wahl.

The FDP MP Jochen Haußmann offered Lucha to continue to focus on care even after the failed nursing chamber.

“We are available for that,” said Haußmann.

Concrete proposals have already been made to strengthen care in Baden-Württemberg.

The CDU took note of the chamber's alleged failure.

“For us, what we have always said with regard to the nursing chamber applies: We see it as an offer to care, which they can accept and of course also reject, and we will respect any outcome of the registration process,” said the CDU spokesman. Care Policy Group, Tim Bückner.

It is wise to listen to the employees, said the state chairman of the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB), Kai Burmeister.

“Unfortunately, the state government wanted to hit its head against the wall.

A lot of time was lost,” said Burmeister.

Now we need to address better staffing levels in nursing.

After Rhineland-Palatinate, nursing chambers were also set up in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein.

However, they have already been abolished there because the dissatisfaction with compulsory membership, compulsory contributions and, in some cases, the management of the chambers in both federal states was too great.

In addition to Rhineland-Palatinate, there is currently a nursing chamber in North Rhine-Westphalia.
