Explosive moments for vacationers on Lake Lugano in Italy: an avalanche of stones rained down on a mountain road.

Three cars were hit, including a family's Toyota.

Varese – The twin town of Cadegliano-Viconago in Lombardy is an insider tip for Italy fans.

From the community on the border with Swiss Ticino you have unforgettable panoramic views of Lake Lugano.

A Dutch family also went here at the weekend, apparently wanting to enjoy the early spring there.

Rockfall hits holidaymakers in Italy: Suddenly the rocks rain down on the road

As the Dutch were about to pass the road between the two districts, an avalanche full of head-sized stones suddenly released from the steep slope above them.

The coarse rubble poured onto the road and hit the rear right side of the car, which was completely crushed.

Explosive: On the other side of the street, the abyss yawns behind a guardrail.

At first it was not clear whether the rubble would push the car away.

The stones also rained down on two other cars, which were also hit by the rocks.

It had rained heavily in the previous days, and the masses of water had apparently washed away the boulders and caused them to slide.

Cars demolished: After falling rocks, the occupants fled to the village on foot

Nothing happened to the vehicle's occupants; they fled to the village on foot, but some of their cars were severely demolished.

After assessing the situation, the damaged vehicles were towed away.

The road is closed until further notice.

If you want to drive from Cadegliano to Viconago, you first have to drive along serpentines into the valley, 230 meters lower, and then back up again.
