The period over which this liturgical time extends, in the Catholic religion, symbolizes the years spent by the Hebrew people in the Sinai desert before reaching the Promised Land, the duration of the flood, of Moses' fast before receiving the tables of the Law... It is more generally the number of “waiting”.
It also refers to the days that Jesus spent in the desert after his baptism, resisting the temptations of the devil, and drawing from prayer and fasting the strength and inner resources necessary for his public mission.
For Christians, it is therefore a question of refocusing on the essential, and preparing for the Easter celebration through more sobriety and sharing.
