The energy district in Feldafing has been climate neutral since the beginning of the year.

In the summer, photovoltaic systems will be built on the roofs of the kindergarten and the fire department.

The energy district is a unique project in the district.

Feldafing – It was warm, very warm in the boiler room of the Feldafing gym on Monday evening.

This was due to the two combined heat and power plants (CHP), which radiate residual heat.

“Insulation work is planned,” explained energy consultant Arthur Dornburg to the energy working group of the local council, which visited the facility.

The gym's heating room now has two heat pumps, two combined heat and power plants and a power-to-heat system to convert electricity into heat.

There are also five heat storage units, each with a capacity of 1500 liters.

The gymnasium is the heart of the energy district, which supplies municipal buildings in a climate-neutral manner.

Mayor Bernhard Sontheim is pleased: “The project is unique in the district.”

It is a new era of energy supply in Feldafing.

The combined heat and power plants have been running on biogas since January 1st.

“We have been CO2 neutral since the beginning of the year,” said Dornburg.

“We are currently producing more electricity than we need, and in that sense we are even CO2 negative.” The excess electricity produced is fed back into the grid.

Dornburg is from Berg, runs the Munich company Bluemove-Consulting and is responsible for the ecological model.

The blue poster in the heating room of the gym says: “The Feldafing energy district is supplied with renewable energy using CHP plants, heat pumps, power-to-heat, heat storage and electricity storage.” This is expected to save 302 tons of CO2 per year.

That's about as much as seven average families of four emit per year through electricity use, heating, driving, traveling and consumption.

How to proceed now

The energy district already supplies the gym, the library and the assisted living with heat.

In addition, the kindergarten, the fire station and the old police station are to be connected.

Since heating systems are not converted in winter but in summer, this will only happen in a few months.

“By and large, the electricity and heat supply should run exclusively via heat pumps and PV systems.

“As little gas as possible should be used,” explained Dornburg.

“Gas consumption should be significantly reduced with the photovoltaic systems.”

The next step is to install these systems to produce electricity for the combined heat and power plants.

Until then, they would be heated with biogas, said Dornburg.

“The PV systems should be on both sides of the roof, east and west, of the kindergarten and the fire station,” explained Sontheim.

The roof of the gymnasium is structurally unsuitable and the old police station is a listed building, said Dornburg.

The first local council decision to establish the energy district was made in July 2019. Since then, the Feldafingen planning, development and economic development company (Pewu) and Dornburg have been working on it (we reported).

The energy district is an important building block for Feldafing to become energy self-sufficient.

And above all, the project is a key step towards CO2 neutrality.
