65-year-old Sheila Weinberg was elected tonight (Wednesday) as a member of the Kiryat Tivon council.

Weinberg will be the first transgender woman in Israel to become a quorum member of a council plenum of a local authority.

"I was labeled as a son," says Sheila Weinberg, who was chosen as a member of the "Yoter LaTevon" list, a union of the "Mertz" lists, "Yesh Atid", "Tevon Our" and "New Contract" lists.

"Even a woman has difficulties and for a transgender woman in general the difficulties are double and multiplied", she said.

"I personally entered politics on a Meretz ticket, but I always feel that I have to prove much more."

Weinberg is a mother of two and grandmother to her grandson who lives with her partner in Kiryat Amal.

"The message in the contest was that I want an equal place at the decision-making table," she said.

She has a master's degree in the philosophy of history, is the chairwoman of the women's association "Trance Israel", a member of the gay committee, among the leaders of "Building an Alternative" and an



activist in the protest. "All my life I have been involved in teaching and education.

It is important to me to promote the issues of education in the settlement and the issue of young people and the gay community," she said in a conversation with Walla! and added that "I think that as a transgender woman I put my foot in the door and opened it for transgender women and other transgenders.

In the meantime, I promise that I will act not only for the community in Tivon but for the entire community in Israel and I will see that the glass ceiling can be broken not only here but everywhere."
