Rather confined to forest areas, processionary caterpillars approach towns.
This is the case in Compiègne (Oise).
“We have suffered successive attacks for two years,” we explain at the town hall.
They are usually found on pines and oaks but unfortunately they seem to diversify their diet and occupy cherry trees.

Their hairs, which are highly stinging and invisible to the naked eye, fly away and can cause irritation.
Attacks are particularly common at this time of year as the caterpillars migrate to the ground to bury themselves in groups.
So, to avoid being confronted with this scourge, the green spaces service, renamed green heritage, decided to invite its sworn enemy: the tit, more precisely the great tit.
Nine tit nest boxes have been positioned in recent days in the Bois de Plaisance ZAC, on trees that are victims of these hairy insects which can fly hundreds of meters around.
