After an appeal, a 28-year-old from Langgöns who hit his ex's new partner received a two-year suspended sentence instead of prison.

Langgöns - A 28-year-old Langgönser (Giessen district) who hit his ex-partner's new boyfriend on the street near Langgöns-Oberkleen escapes a prison sentence.

After he was sentenced to two years and three months in prison for the crime at the Giessen district court in April 2021, the man was given a suspended sentence of two years following an appeal.

In the early afternoon of April 16, 2020, the defendant was driving on the road between Oberkleen and Niederkleen when he spotted his ex's friend's car in the opposite lane.

He turned around and gave chase.

Crime in the Gießen district: Victim jumps onto the hood of the car in distress

He explained in court that he did not know that his former girlfriend was driving in the car in front of him with shaky hands and not her partner.

He said he had recently drunk three to four glasses of cider at a birthday party.

The ex-partner was on her way to pick up her new boyfriend from work.

When she drove onto the company premises in Oberkleen, the defendant gave up the pursuit and turned around over a turning hammer.

However, the ex's new boyfriend stood gesticulating on the street.

The defendant drove towards the man at 20 km/h without stopping.

The victim jumped onto the hood as a last resort.

At that moment the defendant accelerated.

The acceleration caused the victim to fly into the windshield and the glass shattered with a crash.

Miraculously and with strength and skill, the victim held on to the hood for several seconds while the car traveled 20 meters downhill.

"If I had gotten under the car, I would be dead now," the man said.

On a curve he was thrown onto the side of the road into a ditch.

Trial in Gießen: Crime largely admitted

The appeal process at the Giessen regional court dates back several months.

The defendant was sentenced to two years probation for grievous bodily harm, dangerous interference with traffic, hit-and-run and negligent drunken driving.

His driving license was revoked and he was not allowed to get a new one for a period of three months.

According to an agreement, he will pay the victim 50,000 euros to settle the claims.
