On December 13, in a packed room, an impatient audience awaited the auction by the Tajan house of two paintings by Pietro Lorenzetti (1280-1348).
Unknown to the general public, this 14th century painter is considered by art historians, notably by the expert Éric Turquin, as
"a major artist for gold-ground painting of the Sienese school"
.
The first wooden panel, representing Saint Sylvester, was estimated at 1.5 to 2 million euros.
The second, of Saint Helena, had a more modest estimate of €400,000 to €600,000, taking into account its state of conservation.
These two works each found buyers at €3,034,800 and €1,657,600.
That’s almost 4.7 million euros!
They were acquired after a great bidding war by the same buyer, an American better known for his collection of contemporary art.
In November, the same interest was focused on a painting by Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806)
