The Senate's justice committee on Wednesday approved a motion backed by the parties of the rulingright/centre-right coalition calling on the government to consider the introduction of psycho-aptitude tests for candidates for roles in the Italian judiciary.
Magistrates union ANM has criticized the idea, saying the tests would make the already highly selective process to become a magistrate even longer and more arduous.
But Erika Stefani, the head of the League's delegation on the committee, defended the mooted move.
"Psycho-aptitude tests feature in many public recruitment competitions so we don't see what the problem is," Stefani said.
"It is right that a candidate's ability to deal with certainstressful situations is assessed with such delicate, responsible roles.
- "Psycho-aptitude tests are foreseen in many public competitions so we don't see what the problem is.
It is right that when one holds such delicate and responsible roles, the candidate's ability to deal with certain stressful situations should be assessed". The group leader of the League in the Senate Justice Commission Erika Stefani thus comments on the approval of the opinion formulated by the rapporteur Pierantonio Zanettin which commits the government to evaluate the opportunity to include psycho-aptitude tests in the selection of magistrates. An amendment just approved by the Senate Justice Commission chaired by Giulia Bongiorno. "Then it is clear - adds the senator - that we will have to see how these tests will be carried out which must always be respectful of the person". But Erika Stefani also shares the part of the opinion in which it is invited to include, in the evaluation of the robes, all the documents produced by the individual magistrate and not just sample documents.
"Obviously the evaluating Commission will have to do a lot of work - she observes - but it is important that there is a complete and clear picture of the actions of those who need to be evaluated".
