The government of Senegal approved on Wednesday an amnesty bill for acts committed during the unrest experienced by the country for three years, in the midst of a crisis surrounding the postponement of the presidential election, presidential services indicated.
Macky Sall specified that it concerns
“the facts relating to the political demonstrations occurring between 2021 and 2024”
which gave rise to hundreds of arrests of opponents, caused dozens of deaths and caused significant material damage as ransacking of the University of Dakar.
This amnesty measure was proposed by President Macky Sall in a
“desire to appease the political space, reconciliation and overcoming”
, according to the report of the Council of Ministers.
The text must now be approved by the National Assembly on an unspecified date.
The president will consult the opinion of the Constitutional Council
Senegalese head of state Macky Sall will seek its opinion from the Constitutional Council on recommendations recommending that the postponed presidential election be held weeks after the end of his mandate and that he remain in office until his successor is installed , indicated his services.
The president
“will refer the matter to the Constitutional Council to obtain its opinion on the conclusions and recommendations of the national dialogue”
which met on Monday and Tuesday, said a press release.
He will receive the report of this
“dialogue”
on Monday, adds the press release which provides no indication of when the head of state will decide on these recommendations, in particular on the date of the election.
