Eurasburg has to make do with around 1.7 million euros less this year than expected.

A surprise tax refund is also to blame.

Eurasburg – In recent years, the budget discussions in the Eurasburg municipal council have always been a pleasure.

The treasurer relaxedly led through the extensive figures and then presented a comprehensive package of investment measures.

The committee finally approved the financial package with thanks for the good work and was pleased about a growing balance in the reserve account.

However, when treasurer Markus Gerold presented his “draft for the budget documents”, there was a considerable need for speech.

The reason was bad news with which Mayor Moritz Sappl opened the municipal council meeting on Tuesday evening: within a few days, at the end of January, the municipality suddenly had “around 1.7 million euros less” for the current year.

The reason is a hefty trade tax refund of 844,305 euros, “which we had already taken into account,” said treasurer Gerold.

That's not enough bad news: 879,744 euros in trade tax had already been budgeted for the current year.

Due to new assessment notices from the tax office, these shrank to just 7,300 euros.

Since the repayments affect the year 2022, it could happen that this is not the end of the story.

According to the municipal treasurer, it is to be feared that a portion will also have to be paid back for the year 2023, in which the municipality recorded trade tax revenue of around 2.9 million euros.

“We thought it could continue like this, but that wasn’t the case,” stated Gerold.

The announcement of the huge hole in the municipal coffers was not without consequences for the subsequent budget discussions.

“This is the most important meeting we have had in these six years,” emphasized local councilor Hans Urban.

“We have to keep the financial security of the community in mind and as a local council we have to weigh up very carefully which investments make the most sense for the around 4,300 citizens of our community.”

The hole in the cash register – “that hurts us brutally,” noted town hall boss Sappl – combined with the huge investments that will have to be made in the next few years, among other things, for the school merger project.

The sports club is the first to feel this: the desired subsidy of around 1.3 million euros for the planned artificial turf was finally rejected by the local council on Tuesday.

And for the first time in many, many years, some of the investment measures that had already been planned were canceled that would previously have been granted to the community, local institutions and associations.

In concrete terms, this means: The Beuerberg volunteer fire department has to be patient with converting the suitcase lighting to LED (3,000 euros) as well as expanding the radio system (cost: 15,000 euros).

A new planing machine for the construction yard, 5000 euros: deleted.

By the next meeting of the local council in March, the treasurer will incorporate the deletions discussed on Tuesday evening into the draft budget for 2024.

The budget will then be voted on for the final time.

The discussions made it clear: “We have to pay attention to the coal,” said treasurer Gerold.

And Mayor Sappl stated soberly: “The numbers are no longer funny.

But we will have to deal with the situation now.”
