On February 25, Anya Taylor-Joy published on her Instagram account a photo of the outfit chosen for the New York premiere of
Dune II
, the film directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Her choice fell on a Maison Margiela dress under which she had to wear a corset.
A detail that she reveals in another black and white photo, the very marked waist, the two hands hiding her chest.
A few hours later, it was Kim Kardashian's turn to publish a photo in a Mugler corset, compressed chest and emphasized waist.
Both did not fail to trigger a series of negative comments.
Indeed, on the networks, many people denounce the injunction that this sends to women and young girls.
The corset firstly conveys an image of constraint.
Then clichés that can encourage the cult of extreme thinness.
“Yes, let's set more unrealistic standards and expectations for women,” “We all understand the power of influencers and marketing and making money from photos, however for someone who has daughters herself, is this something you want them to admire?”, we can read under Kim Kardashian’s post.
As for the actress from the series
Lady's Game,
the same speech: “Yay, promotion of body dysmorphia once again!!
Shame on you!”, “This is not a healthy look for women”, “Anya I love you but please don’t post things that could be dangerous for your young fans”, “You Do you realize how harmful corsets are to women's health and should not be promoted? "... Moreover, Kim Kardashian had already worn a corset during the Met Gala in 2019 and admitted to having "never so suffered with his life.
Faced with this wave of comments, some fans of Anya Taylor-Joy, on the contrary, spoke out to defend the actress and denounce the body shaming of which thin people can be victims.
“How come people think being so thin is unhealthy?”, “You all need to stop body shaming.
Thin people exist naturally and some of you swear that can only happen by having an eating disorder.”
In any case, this corset outfit marks a new controversy for the actress who had already been accused of cultural appropriation with her Dior outfit during the London premiere.
A way to get noticed on the chessboard of a casting (Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Florence Pugh...) particularly gifted at causing a sensation thanks to their looks?
