Because of the warning strike in local transport, all buses in Göttingen have been standing still since the morning.

Verdi is starting his multi-day strike in Lower Saxony.

Other cities are expected to follow on Thursday.

Göttingen - The multi-day warning strike in local transport began in Göttingen on Wednesday.

In the morning, employees of the Göttingen transport company (GöVB) stopped work and took up a position as strike guards in front of the factory gate, as Verdi union secretary Jan von Alvensleben told the dpa.

He was satisfied with the response.

“There is no bus.

Participation in the warning strike is very high.” Other cities are expected to follow on Thursday.

Von Alvensleben said that 100 strikers alone came to the strike meeting in front of the gate to the transport company's depot in Göttingen that morning.

More were added during the day.

The mood was good and the strikers made their displeasure loud with whistles.

The high level of participation shows the great dissatisfaction with the progress of the current collective bargaining round, said von Alvensleben.

“You can tell there’s tension in the air.”

The strike will be extended on Thursday

The strike is part of a nationwide Verdi campaign week in local transport that has been running since Monday.

Göttingen is the first city in Lower Saxony to take part.

Hanover, Braunschweig, Osnabrück, Wolfsburg and Goslar are to follow on Thursday, and Bremen on Friday.

The strike is scheduled to last everywhere until Friday.

On the final day, Verdi is planning joint demonstrations with “Fridays for Future” in several cities, for example in Hanover and Bremen.

The Göttingen transport company has canceled all trips for the three days of the strike.

The transport companies in Hanover and Braunschweig leave all buses and light rail vehicles in the depot on Thursday and Friday.

Goslar city bus and Osnabrück Metrobus will stop operating for two days from Thursday.

According to the Verkehrs-GmbH, more than 80 percent of all trips in Wolfsburg will be canceled on the two days.

On Friday, the Bremer Straßenbahn-AG also leaves all buses and trams in the depot.

Employers cancel negotiation date

Last week there were warning strikes in Lower Saxony on Monday and Tuesday, which led to massive disruptions in local transport.

The union is demanding, among other things, three days more vacation, longer rest periods, an adjustment to the time allowances and an upgrade of the pay scale.

The Lower Saxony Municipal Employers' Association (KAV) has canceled the fourth round of negotiations planned for next Monday after Verdi called for a warning strike.
