With the treasure museum containing thousands of rare cameras, a unique gallery, an advanced photography school of its kind, and a city archive that is being built, "The Camera" is considered one of the gems of B.S.

The Camera Museum/PR

The entrance to the space of the photography museum in Be'er Sheva is shrouded in mystery.

In a long, mostly dark hall, simulating a photographer's darkroom, ancient cameras are displayed alongside photos from other days and times.

Above each camera hangs a sharp and focused light source, which illuminates and brings it to life.

The place is therefore a kind of time travel for the visitors, and for example, a rare camera that took pictures of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor with unique photos from that historical moment is now on display, and another camera, the old camera of Goel Drori, the man behind the place, shows pictures that he took in Fayed that in Egypt during the Yom Kippur War.

The photographer in Be'er Sheva/public relations

The photography museum is only a small part of the 2-story Telmaniyeh association building.

On the first floor of the place there is a visitors' complex with the unique camera museum, a photography gallery, a patio and a courtyard, and its upper floor includes a study complex that includes a classroom and a professional photography studio and the Be'er Sheva photo archive and the city's heritage research institute.

The one who pushed and promoted the birth of the place, which was renovated and renewed thanks to the lottery's assistance, is Goel Drori (75), beloved of the city of Be'er Sheva, a photographer, and a multidisciplinary artist.

In addition to the establishment of the Telmaniya building, Goel was also involved in the establishment of the Art Gallery in Be'er Sheva and for over 44 years, he taught photography in high schools in Be'er Sheva, at the Kay Academic College of Education and at the School of Continuing Studies of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. The special one in which Tzalmaniya is located was built in 1934 and was initially used as a school for the children of the Christian community that lived in the Mandatory city of Be'er Sheva.

This is one of the most beautifully preserved buildings in the city and when I came up with the idea to establish the studio, I immediately thought how well suited this impressive building is to its new purpose," he says.

How did the project start?

"In 2011, after presenting the Beer Sheva History Exhibition at the city's Great Mosque, I approached Mayor Rubik Danilovich and told him about my dream in the field of photography. Rubik, for whom the word "real dream" jumps into action, began to set processes in motion and checked where the budget for the project could be obtained. Who To our delight, the Lottery agreed to this, which provided most of the funding for the construction of the place. In fact, without the Lottery, this place would not exist. Since it is one of the seven most beautiful buildings in the city, the renovation and expansion of the place involved strict conservation work, and for this purpose we hired an architect and a contractor specializing in conservation The construction continued for about a decade and in 2022 we could say goodbye to the completion and in September of that year we inaugurated the place."

You are 75 today, where do you get the strength to initiate and promote projects even at this advanced age?

"The strength comes from a great desire to document life. A good example of this is the Corona period. When other people found themselves idle between 4 walls, I decided that I couldn't help but just sit like that and wrote the book "Once I photographed - a city was born here". In book 227 pages and it contains 100 stories from Be'er Sheva from the day it was founded by the Ottomans until these days. This book joins my other photo albums including: Beer Sheva 25 Years Album, Dimona Album, Book for Pilgrims in Bethlehem, Negev Economic Yearbooks, Tammon, and other books ".

One of the highlights of the place is, as mentioned, the camera museum, which is based on Goel Drori's huge camera collection, as well as other donors from around the world, including over 500 hundred cameras donated by the late Michel Zilberstein from Boston, and about 350 cameras donated by Dr. Jacob and Josie Amsalem, new immigrants from France who live in Ashdod.

The gallery/PR

In the on-site gallery there is an exhibition of the city of Beer Sheva in the 1970s, a time when the city began to develop and build and change its face forever.

On the second floor, among other things, the photography school operates, which includes the most sophisticated equipment in its field, computer stations and a smart classroom.

"We also have another large space where we are currently setting up the Beer Sheva photo archive, and the goal is that people will be able to go to our website and view the photos," notes Goel.

"As of today, many students and researchers from Israel and the world come to us, so the place is lively and buzzing with activity, and it is a unique experience for adults and children alike."
