The planets are aligning between Brussels and Donald Tusk's Poland, less than four months before the European elections.
As Ursula von der Leyen announced last week during a trip to Warsaw, the Commission effectively lifted on Thursday part of the financial restrictions imposed on Warsaw due to its breaches of the rule of law.
Poland can thus claim - in absolute terms - some 137 billion euros, including 59.8 billion under the recovery plan (25.3 billion in grants and 34.5 billion in loans) and 76.5 billion on cohesion funds.
“A real mountain of money, which we will use wisely
,” promised Donald Tusk, head of the Polish government since mid-December 2023, following the failure of the Law and Justice party (PiS), which methodically defeated the rule of law, attacking in particular the independence of the judiciary and the freedom of the media.
