In terms of traffic, it is the long-running favorite in Mittenwald: no route has been discussed as hotly as the elevated road.

Now the local councils have it in black and white: According to the traffic planners, the only thing that makes sense is completely the same regulation as in the Obermarkt - i.e. a complete closure to traffic between 10 a.m. and 5 a.m.

Mittenwald – It’s as if the Gries district was swallowing cars.

They're just gone.

Well, of course they didn't disappear into thin air, otherwise Andreas Bergmann would have given his lecture on Tuesday evening in the Mittenwald market town council for free.

But an average of 691 cars drive over the elevated road into Gries every day - but only 115 drive out again.

“A clear asymmetry in the traffic flows,” the qualified engineer diagnoses in technical jargon, surprised.

“We were very surprised by that,” says Bergmann.

This means that locals in particular know how to get to Gries as quickly as possible and then get out again quickly via Goethe- or Ludwig-Murr-Straße.

One of the few surprises in the transport framework plan developed by the transport planning company “Stadt Land Verkehr” in Munich.

On Tuesday evening, Bergmann presented him to the committee (report to follow).

There were no groundbreaking findings.

But the municipality now has a lot of what was already suspected in black and white.

The local council will soon make decisions based on these findings.

This solution suits local citizens as well as tourists and business people.

Andreas Bergmann

Like in the Hochstrasse case, which has been running through the local council's agenda for years, like chewing gum.

Detailed figures can now be used to prove that there is actually only one possible solution: to treat Hochstrasse in the same way as the adjacent Obermarkt.

In other words, to impose a daily traffic closure from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m.

The time is adapted to the upper market.

“Otherwise we would have to change the entry times there too,” explains Bergmann.

But in the expert's opinion it's not necessary.

“Until 10 a.m. is excellent, after that the guests have finished sleeping in and having breakfast and can line the car-free pedestrian zone.” The elevated road should remain accessible on both sides during the open hours between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.

For him, the fact that the elevated road from Karwendel in the direction of Kranzberg is used five times more than the other way around is also an indication for those who know the area: “The drivers already know how to get out of Gries.” In other words: they would also know how to get out without it Hochstraße reaches Mittenwald's oldest district.

“The alternative routes in and out of Gries are already being used today.” So the closure of traffic from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. would be justifiable.

The limit for residential areas is 4,000 vehicles per day

The advantages are obvious and have become particularly apparent during the pandemic period.

As is well known, the elevated road was closed at that time in order to accommodate more gastronomic options.

If the church forecourt and elevated road are car-free, pedestrians are allowed to stroll and make themselves comfortable in front of the bars in the warm months.

“This solution benefits local citizens as well as tourists and business people.”

Traffic will ultimately flow via Goethe- and Ludwig-Murr-Straße.

“But the additional burden is limited,” assures Bergmann.

According to the forecasts, the number of daily car trips on Ludwig-Murr-Straße will increase on average to 1200 (previously 900) and on Goethestrasse to 880 (previously 550).

“The numbers are still well below the limit values for residential streets.” This is 4,000.

“Very good,” praises Florian Lipp (Free Voters), who has been an ardent supporter of the vehicle-free elevated road for years.

“Then how about a parking ban on Ludwig-Murr-Straße?” That wouldn’t make any sense, says Bergmann.

“There’s enough space.” If the street were even wider without parked cars, road users would also drive faster.

“And that wouldn’t make sense.”
