Comment: Symbolic politics without much substance

Highlights: Hans Moritz: At first glance, it sounds understandable to require asylum seekers to work. But it is symbolic politics without much substance, says the editorial director of the Erdinger/Dorfener Anzeiger. Better than forced labor would be to let refugees learn German more quickly - the key to integration, says Moritz. "This has nothing to do with foreigners. There have long been job opportunities in Germany - one-euro jobs that run through job centers," he adds.

Simply give asylum seekers jobs like that.

It sounds so simple, but it's not, comments editorial director Hans Moritz.

For him it is above all populism.

At first glance, it sounds understandable to require asylum seekers to work.

Many sit idle in their accommodation for months.

That's why you can't blame the Erdinger AfD for calling on the district to follow the example of the Saale-Orla district.

And yet it is symbolic politics without much substance.

It is not that easy to put people into “non-profit” work and pay them for it with tax money.

This has nothing to do with foreigners.

There have long been job opportunities in Germany - one-euro jobs that run through job centers.

The Caritas used goods department store Rentabel, for example, employs such people in order to ideally introduce them to the job market again.

However, such institutions must prove that they do not represent competition for the free market.

If the district were to go and force refugees to clean or trim hedges, the cleaning industry and horticulturists would certainly come forward to object.

Rightly.

It is doubtful whether it is legally tenable to cut funds in the event of a refusal.

Payments to refugees are not wages.

Better than forced labor would be to let refugees learn German more quickly - THE key to integration.

And if work is so helpful and integrating, why is the regular job market so closed off from refugees?
