The unprecedented mapping of the entire Italian coast is underway, destined to transform the conservation and restoration efforts of marine ecosystems.
This was announced in a press release explaining that Ispra has awarded the consortium led by Fugrola a tender to map the coastal habitats of the entire Italian coast, as part of the Marine EcosystemRestoration (Mer) project of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan .
Using cutting-edge technology, the mapping of Posidonia oceanica and Cymodocea nodosa meadows is planned.
The project also involves complete mapping of the coastline up to 800 meters from the coastline towards the interior with Lidar, optical and gravimetric sensors and Ispra will then be able to create the digital Atlas of our seas.
With this intervention, which will take place in three coastal sub-regions (Western Mediterranean Sea, Ionian Sea and Central Mediterranean Sea, Adriatic Sea), the Mer project aims to strengthen the national observation system of marine and coastal ecosystems, thus improving the decision-making process of local governments for the protection of habitats and marine species of conservation interest.
