After the knife attack on two nine and ten year old elementary school students in Duisburg, the suspected attacker has to be taken into custody.
Why he attacked the children on the street remains unclear.
Duisburg - After the knife attack on two elementary school children in Duisburg, an arrest warrant was issued against the suspected attacker for two counts of attempted murder.
A judge sent the 21-year-old into custody, the police and public prosecutor said.
According to initial findings, there is no connection between the suspect and the two school children.
Two knives and a hammer were seized as possible murder weapons.
According to the investigation, the knife attacker was stopped and disarmed by his own father.
The 69-year-old held his son until the police arrived, according to dpa information on the current status of the investigation.
He then allowed himself to be arrested without resistance.
The 21-year-old suspect was visiting his father and then attacked the two children.
First he stabbed a nine-year-old girl and then the ten-year-old boy.
A passer-by shouted at the knife attacker and threw a flashlight at him to get him away from the children.
Children out of danger
The attacker then attacked this witness.
The father of the alleged perpetrator arrived and was able to stop the dramatic event.
The injured children ran back to a primary school, where a teacher came to their aid.
The two victims were out of danger, a police spokesman said on Thursday night.
Before the arrest, the son is said to have told his father that there was information on his cell phone that would explain the crime.
There is no evidence of a politically motivated act.
The crime occurred on Wednesday around 12 p.m. in the middle of a street in a residential area in the Marxloh district of Duisburg.
Victim protection officers from the Duisburg police and emergency pastors then took care of the relatives and eyewitnesses.
According to investigators, the person arrested is a German-Bulgarian.
NRW Schools Minister Dorothee Feller (CDU) was “shocked” by the incident in Duisburg.
