A registrar and the head obstetrician explain why February 29th is a rather unpopular date for couples in the district.

District

- A year has exactly 365 days - but the Earth actually needs almost six hours longer to go around the sun.

In order not to get out of sync, the calendar includes an additional day every fourth year - February 29th.

Katharina Aust and Stefan Rimbach now describe how this special date, which literally only occurs every leap year, affects weddings and birthdays in the district.

The head of the Tegernsee registry office and the head of gynecology at the Agatharied Hospital have had similar experiences, as they say.

In Tegernsee, for example, only a few women and men apparently want to miss out on their annual wedding anniversary.

February 29th is not one of the dates couples want, says Aust.

In the town hall right on the lake, where appointments are often difficult to get, schnapps numbers and other strange data are in high demand instead, explains Aust.

A leap anniversary can hardly keep up with February 22nd, 2022.

Registry office: February 29th is not a typical desired date

However, according to Aust, the lack of accumulation could also be due to the time of year.

January and February are generally not as popular as the most popular months in summer.

However, Aust and her colleagues do not always realize what relevance the date ultimately has for the respective couple.

"Sometimes the couples tell us in small talk afterwards why the date was their absolute wish - but most of the time we don't even know." But so far it has never necessarily had to be February 29th.

The same applies to expectant parents who give birth to their child in Agatharied Hospital.

No matter how much work goes into preparing children's birthdays, some people probably want to consciously save their child from only celebrating their birthday every four years, says Stefan Rimbach, head of gynecology and obstetrics.

Hospital: Birth not desired on February 29th

February 29th is a special date for everyone involved.

“Some parents want to avoid the appointment,” says Rimbach, but for others the date isn’t that important.

And: “We currently have the situation where induction of labor is not desired in order to avoid a possible birth on the 29th.” A planned cesarean section is also not on the agenda today.

According to Rimbach, neither he nor the midwives have ever experienced anyone explicitly wishing for this day.
