The traveling exhibition “Natura 2000” stops in Geretsried.

With exciting lectures and excursions you can embark on a journey of discovery through large and small natural wonders.

Geretsried

– Bavarian Forest National Park, Altmühltal Nature Park and Rhön Biosphere Reserve: The traveling exhibition “Natura 2000” has already been held in these well-known nature conservation facilities.

She will be coming to Geretsried in a few weeks.

Mayor Michael Müller is proud of that.

“We send visitors on a journey of discovery through the large and small natural wonders of our homeland,” said the town hall boss in a press conference.

Despite all the construction activity, Geretsried is still a city in the countryside

Geretsried is surrounded by nature: the town with almost 26,000 inhabitants is nestled between the Isar and the Babenstuben moors.

Despite all the construction activity, Geretsried is still a city in the countryside, Müller emphasized in the town hall on Tuesday.

“We have a natural jewel on our doorstep,” he said, looking at the Isar and its floodplains.

But in the past, people didn't understand how to link the Isar floodplains with the city of Geretsried, said the mayor.

And many people are not aware that, in addition to the Babenstuben moors, the Buckelwiesen and the Loisach are part of the region's European natural heritage.

With the “Natura 2000” exhibition, the city would like to focus on the nature around Geretsried.

The Bavarian Academy for Nature Conservation and Landscape Management (ANL) is sending the traveling exhibition on tour.

So far it has been shown at 14 locations in the Free State.

The city of Geretsried also applied and, according to nature tourism coordinator Günther Loiskandl, showed a certain persistence.

This surprised the academy in Laufen, said Loiskandl.

The same goes for the effort the city puts in: the exhibition is framed by an accompanying program that the city created with, among others, the Lower Nature Conservation Authority at the district office, Tölzer Land Tourismus, the district group of the State Association for Bird Protection (LBV) and the Federal Nature Conservation Association.

Free lectures and excursions in Geretsried's surroundings

There will be free lectures in the town hall on three evenings, dedicated to bird life in the upper Isar Valley (April 12th), alpine diversity in the Tölz Mountains (April 19th) and the preservation of natural treasures in the district (April 26th).

Nature films will be shown on May 21st.

This is followed by a round of discussions.

Four excursions complete the program: With Dr.

Sabine Tapertzhofen from LBV will be going to the moors, forests and meadows between Geretsried and Königsdorf on April 27th.

Nature conservation ranger Bernhard März will lead interested parties through the upper Isar valley near Geretsried on May 12th.

The Babenstuben moors will be explored on May 26th together with Joachim Kaschek from the Lower Nature Conservation Authority.

Fabian Unger will look at the dry habitats on the Isar during his tour on June 2nd.

In May, the nature tourism coordination is also planning another event for children and young people together with the city library.

Exhibition serves as a basis for tourism concept

As reported, the city is participating in the “FöRNatKom” funding program (promotion of environmentally and climate-friendly nature experiences and nature tourism offers in Bavarian municipalities) in order to increase the recreational and leisure value of Geretsried through offers for residents and visitors.

The program of the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection is intended to help municipalities in the development and implementation of innovative tourism offers that take into account the protection of the climate, environment and nature.

As part of this program, Geretsried advertised the position of nature tourism coordination in 2022, and Günther Loiskandl successfully applied for it.

The position is limited until 2025.

The native of Lower Austria is supposed to develop and implement an overall nature tourism concept for the city.

Mayor Müller sees the exhibition and its supporting program as a basis for developing this tourism concept.

For Loiskandl, the exhibition also offers the opportunity to build and expand partnerships.

According to the nature tourism coordinator, there will be two more nature-related exhibitions in Geretsried.
